24-HOUR BOWLS MARATHON

Starting at 6 pm tonight (Friday), Tenby bowlers, 'hopefully', will be delivering a continuous stream of bowls across the hallowed turf, until 6 pm tomorrow (Saturday). Every bowl will be counted.

Sponsors of the event, which is in aid of our 'bowling green maintenance equipment' are invited to guess the exact number of bowls bowled in the 24 hours. The nearest guess will win a long weekend or midweek break in Scotland. Second prize is £25.

All bowlers are invited to join in the fun, whether they are sponsored or not - floodlights supplied.

Following on immediately there will be a party for all members and in particular the Tenby Carruthers team, who hopefully will be celebrating a first round victory over visitors, Penterch BC.

WWLBA Singles

On Sunday, the skilful lady bowlers of Pembrokeshire take over the Tenby green in the first rounds of their two-wood singles competition.

Pembroke Dock 90 (12 pts)

Tenby 73 (2)

The Coastal Cottages sponsored Tenby team travelled to Pembroke Dock for a league encounter last Saturday. With a few key players absent, Tenby knew they would be in for a torrid time, especially on the difficult Pembroke Dock green.

On rink one, new skip Jon Webb got straight into the groove and established an early lead. His rink of Sam McNeilly, Reg Thake and Luke Guymer seemed to have the game sewn up, but unfortunately they just fell away at the end, losing by five shots.

Rink two, skipped by Terry Howells, were involved in a close tussle, with the lead changing hands many times. With good performances by Dai Spencer, debutant Ashley Hooper and Peter Day, Terry's men finally emerged victorious by six shots.

Captain for the day, Andrew Muskett, and his rink of Gerald Hewitt, Harry Meads and Craig Guymer were always in with a chance in their match. Unfortunately, the Tenby boys just couldn't sustain it, and finally lost out by seven shots.

Simon Evans and his rink of Steve Taylor, Bill Bailey and Terry Preston were up against it from the start. The rink did well to keep in touch by sheer determination, but eventually lost out by 12 shots.

This was the third season in a row that Tenby have lost in Pembroke Dock, so this for the Tenby team is turning into a bit of a 'bogey green'. The Tenby team must be commended for their effort, as with big players out, they did well to lose overall by only 17 shots. Again thanks to all the Goscar players who stepped up to the first team to help out.

Tomorrow (Saturday), in Tenby, the team takes on Pentyrch in the Carruthers Shield, with a 2.30 pm start.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Pembroke Dock skips only):

Gerald Hewitt, Harry Meads, Craig Guymer, Andrew Muskett 16; B. Dowling 23.

Steve Taylor, Bill Bailey, Terry Preston, Simon Evans 17; H. Hangar 29.

Sam McNeilly, Reg Thake, Luke Guymer, Jon Webb 17; J. Williams 22.

Dai Spencer, Ashley Hooper, Peter Day, Terry Howells 23; R. Jones 16.

FIVE ARCHES 63 (0) PEMBROKE DOCK 103 (14 pts)

A Friday evening game against Five Arches bogey side, Pembroke Dock, turned out to be just that. The poorest Arches display of the season saw them lose on all four rinks and concede defeat by 40 shots. It does not seem believable!

On rink one, Ray Holly, up against H. Hanger, scored on only six ends, though it included two counts of five, and went down by 15 shots. Only two shots down after 14 ends, over the last third of the game 13 shots were conceded.

Alongside, Roy Powling, with the only unchanged quartet, did not score until the seventh end and were well down throughout the evening. A pick-up of three shots over the last two ends saw them into double figures, but the final deficit was still 19 shots, 15 being given away in three disastrous ends.

It seemed throughout the evening that the Arches would at least have one winning rink, that of Mike Crockford. Steady bowling by all saw them stretch into an eight-shot lead after 16 ends and then the malaise set in. Conceding 10 unanswered shots over the last five ends, including a three on the last, Mike eventually lost by two.

A ding dong game on rink five, with the lead changing hands several times, saw D. King-Thomas's rink into a slender three-shot lead after 18 ends, only to lose a bad four on the next end. Chasing a two-shot deficit on the final end and going for shots to draw the game, an unfortunate further two shots were given away.

An unfortunate result, but all Pembroke Dock rinks seemed well balanced and had strength in depth and will give the league favourites, Saundersfoot, a strong contest for the title.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Pembrke Dock skips only):

B. Diment, J. Best, P. Hooper, R. Holly 15; H. Hanger 30.

R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 10; B. Dowling 29.

N. Dickinson, B. Russell, B. Barnikel, M. Crockford 21; R. Jones 23.

M. Donoghue, D. Silcox, K. Hubbard, D. King-Thomas 17; J. Williams 21.

FIVE ARCHES 86 (12 pts) MILFORD HAVEN 73 (2)

How fortunes change in 24 hours! After the debacle of the previous evening against Pembroke Dock, the Saturday afternoon visitors were Milford Haven. A much better performance from, at least, three of the home rinks, saw the Arches pick up a 12-point win, but this was in the balance right to the end.

After 18 ends Milford were in the lead by a single shot, but a late surge by the Arches saw a net gain of 14 shots over those last three ends. Shades of France v England!

Ray Holly's rink led the way home with a comfortable 17- shot advantage. The whole rink played well as a unit, especially Peter Hooper at third. A mid-game burst from the eighth end, when the scores were level, saw them pick up 15 shots by the 15th end.

The again unchanged rink of Roy Powling showed their promise and, playing well, were always in the lead and by the 10th end were 12 shots in front. A five-end stutter followed and the lead was cut back to three, but with a final flourish they finished with a seven shot plus score.

In the absence of Mike Crockford, Bert Barnikel was promoted to skip the rink, with Keith Hubbard coming in as third. They did not let the side down and after dropping a count of six on the 15th end when seven shots in front, ran out winners by three shots.

On rink two, Dave King-Thomas's rink were never in the game and lost by 14 shots. No comment!

Keith Hubbard was making his last appearance for the Arches as he goes into hospital next week for an operation. All the Five Arches members hope the operation is successful and wish him a speedy recovery. He will be sorely missed on the green.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Milford Haven skips only):

J. Taylor, J. Best, P. Hooper, R. Holly 28; P. Collins 11.

R. Hurlow, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 23; R. Thomas 16.

N. Dickinson, H. Guy, K. Hubbard, B. Barnikel 24; B. Howells 21.

B. Diment, M. Donoghue, D. Silcox, D. King-Thomas 11; E. Sturley 25.

GOSCAR 63 (3 pts)

ST. BRIDES 88 (11)

Last Sunday saw the boys of Goscar play host to St. Brides for their second encounter within a fortnight. After losing previously to them by only two shots and with glorious hot weather, they were confident they could get revenge for that defeat on their home green. Unfortunately, their confidence was not proven as St. Brides ran out easy victors by 25 shots.

St. Brides always had the slight edge in a very tight game on rink two, although some good bowling by young Joe Richards and some important shots by Alan Redman and skip Jonathan Hubbard, when needed, kept the home side in it. With two ends left, they trailed by four, but a count of three and a single on the final end earned them an honourable draw

Rink three saw skip for the day Ted Brutnell and his men get off to a disastrous start when they dropped 12 shots in the first three ends. Unfortunately, this also included a maximum 'hot shot' count of eight on the second end for St. Brides. After that they fought back well, but could never recover against a very strong foursome, eventually losing by a 20-shot margin.

The rink led by Harry Meads took command from the start, with Eric Dorling having a superb game at second. After dropping a five to trail 14-12, the home side recovered their composure to regain the lead with a five themselves, from whereon they continued to score consistently to ease home victorious by four shots.

Graham Hill found the going tough at skip on rink five against a strong quartet for the visitors. They never looked in trouble and led from start, the only highlight for Goscar being a pick-up of four shots on the last end to reduce the overall deficit to nine.

Rink scores (Goscar first, St. Brides skips only):

J. Richards, C. Roberts, A. Redman, J. Hubbard 15; L. Davies 15.

S. Askew, A. Vincent, B. Bailey, T. Brutnell 12; R. Pring 32

S. Taylor, E. Dorling, A. Rootes, H. Meads 25; T. Shaw 21.

G. Hewitt, A. Hooper, D. Watkins, G. Hill 11; S. Arris 20.
