Tenby 87 (10 pts.)

The Jones & Jones sponsored Tenby team kicked off the 2004 season with a tough encounter against last year's high fliers Haverfordwest. Both sides would be using this as a guideline for the coming season. After the captains welcoming speeches, it was straight down to business.

First up were Andrew Muskett and his rink of Gerald Hewitt, Rob Wilkins and Dave Morgan. With Gerald having an excellent game at lead, the rink managed to grind out an excellent seven-shot victory.

Rink two was skipped by Tenby captain Pat Currie, playing his first game of the year, supported well by Sam McNeilly, Alan Redman and Jon Webb. It turned out to be a very tight battle, with the Haverfordwest rink just coming out on top by a margin of three shots. Captain Pat was upbeat after, however, stating that he was more than happy with his own performance as well as his rink's overall contribution.

Simon Evans's rink of Dai Spencer, Bill Bailey and Dai Newth succumbed to the same three-shot deficit. With a poor start, the rink were always playing 'catch up' and did well to keep in contention right to the end. The rink showed a good fighting spirit, but Dai was first to admit he had an 'off day'.

Ten shots was the winning margin on rink four, with rock solid performances from skip Terry Howells, Lee Richards, Terry Preston and Peter Day.

A good sound team effort from Tenby gave them an overall final victory of 11 shots. It was always going to be a close game, but the Tenby side must be more than pleased with the start they have made to the new campaign.

Special thanks must go to Hayley, Lynn and Archie for the meal in the bar after and of course the ladies who provide the tea at 'half-time'.

The Tenby team's next match is on Sunday, a local derby against the Five Arches, start time 2.30 pm.

GOSCAR 63 (4 pts)

BORDERERS 74 (10)

Goscar started their 2004 league campaign with a visit to Whitland on Sunday. The team were that eager to get started they even arrived at Whitland before the club was open.

Harry Meads's rink were up against the competitive rink of A. Collinge. They were unlucky to lose a five and four on two ends, otherwise it would have been a nip and tuck game, but finally lost by 10 shots.

Gwyn Beynon's rink took on the B. Griffiths rink. Junior Liam McDaid played lead and put on a good show and with Jim Taylor and Graham Hill putting in a sterling effort they ran out five-shot winners.

Rob Wilkins's rink were up against the experienced rink of D. Jenner. They didn't get any rubs of the green all afternoon and were soundly beaten by 25 shots.

Rink of the day was Johnathan Hubbard's against the rink of E. George. It was good to welcome back at No.2 Dennis Watkins after a year on loan to the Dock, who teamed up again with old lead partner Ted Brutnell. They started off at a cracking pace, with Ted outbowling county lead Chris Court most of the match. With Dennis drawing just behind the jack, and Ray Hine and Johnathan stepping in to take out opposing woods, they didn't quite believe they were 14-3 up at tea, but kept their concentration in the second half to run out winners by 19 shots.

Rink scores (Borderers skips only): J. King, A. Vincent, A. Rootes, H. Meads 13; A. Collinge 23.

L. McDaid, J. Taylor, G. Hill, G. Beynon 20; B. Griffiths 15.

S. Askew, J. Richards, S. Taylor, R. Wilkins 4; D. Jenner 29.

T. Brutnell, D. Watkins, R. Hine, J. Hubbard 26; E. George 7.
