GOSCAR 59

ST. KATHERINE'S 88

Goscar travelled to Milford Haven on Sunday for their final Brewers Cup match of the season. At tea after 10 ends in a very tight match, Goscar held a five-shot lead overall, but were unable to maintain their momentum in the second half, losing by 29 shots.

The match was played in a very good spirit by both sides, with plenty of banter on the green on a pleasant afternoon.

Goscar finished the season as they started, a happy team, and are determined that next season more results will go in their favour.

TENBY 102 (14)

The Jones and Jones sponsored Tenby team travelled to Milford Haven for what was to be a 'double header', the two teams having decided to play the league encounter (rink based) alongside the R. F. Diment Cup (overall score).

Tenby fielded an unchanged side from the previous match and again with league positions very close, a win was foremost in the minds of everyone involved.

Captain Pat Currie's rink cruised into a 22-10 lead early on, with Lee Richards in fine form for the rink. The next three ends saw them drop a total of nine shots, which allowed the Milford rink back into the game. However, the experience of Lee, Dave Morgan, Peter Day and Pat just saw them through to a four-shot victory.

The foursome skipped by John Baggott again had another impressive victory by 17 shots. Eight-six in arrears at tea, Dai Spencer, Terry Preston and Dai Newth upped their game a notch, and backed by big turnover shots from John, the rink accelerated away into an unassailable lead.

Paul Diment and his rink of Sam McNeilly, Bill Bailey and Ian Badham were also in arrears at tea-time. The rink then dug in and produced a great second half performance running out creditable nine-shot winners.

The ever-consistent rink skipped by Terry Howells once again triumphed by the margin of six shots. Steady games from Ben Owens, Jon Webb, and Andrew Muskett ensured it was a clean sweep for Tenby on all rinks.

This result gave Tenby 14 points towards the league championship and a Diment Cup victory of 36 shots, securing a place in the semi-final. This performance was like the Tenby of old, keeping it tight early on and then racing away in the final few ends.

The trip home was a pleasant one, with a stop off at Milton Brewery to celebrate, where Bill Bailey told all tales about 'meals on wheels' and Terry Howells actually remembered to turn up. Special thanks to Ben for the above words, such as unassailable, arrears and creditable.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford skips only):

Lee Richards, Dave Morgan, Peter Day, Pat Currie 26; B. Howells 22.

Dai Spencer, Terry Preston, Dai Newth, John Baggott 30; D. Griffiths 13.

Sam McNeilly, Bill Bailey, Ian Badham, Paul Diment 25; R. Thomas 16.

Ben Owens, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett, Terry Howells 21; P. Collins 15.

ST. ISSELL'S 81 (2 pts)

TENBY 91 (12)

The Jones and Jones sponsored Tenby team travelled down to Saundersfoot to play against St. Issell's last Friday evening. With Tenby three points behind arch rivals Saundersfoot in the league, St. Issell's were trying to do their first team a favour by defeating Tenby. This was Tenby's penultimate game in the league, so there could be no room for error.

John Baggott and his rink of Dai Spencer, Terry Preston and Dai Newth (who remembered his underwear) got off to a bad start and never recovered, losing by 12 shots. The rink dropped three counts of four, which accounted for the losing deficit against an impressive John Dugmore. Rink overall performance - could do better!

Captain Pat Currie was involved in a titanic battle with canny Scot Dave Robb. Pat's rink of Lee Richards, Luke Guymer and Peter Day were nearly always behind right through the game, but with the scores 18-18 going into the last end, Pat managed to pick up a three to just win the match at the death.

Top rink of the day for Tenby was that of Sam McNeilly, Bill Bailey, Ian Badham and skip Paul Diment. Ten-all after eight ends, Paul and his men switched into overdrive to run out 13-shot victors, which fortunately covered the losing rink of John Baggott.

Terry Howells always enjoys a close game just to keep the rest of the team on edge. His rink of Ben Owens, Jon Webb and Andrew Muskett were cruising along at 14-9. Suddenly on the unlucky 13th end, they dropped a six - game on. As always, Terry and his men dug in after this little glitch and emerged eventual six-shot winners.

So a win for Tenby by 10 shots and 12 points in the bag, but the Tenby side knew they had been in a battle. At one stage in the second half the valiant St. Issell's lads were getting the better of Tenby and with a stronger finish could have reversed the score.

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Tenby play their last game of the season at home to Pembroke Dock. They need at least five points off this game to make sure of regaining the county shield - so there it is, still very close, with everything to play for!

Rink scores (Tenby first, St. Issell's skips only):

Dai Spencer, Terry Preston, Dai Newth, John Baggott 13; J. Dugmore 25.

Lee Richards, Luke Guymer, Peter Day, Pat Currie 21; D. Robb 18.

Sam McNeilly, Bill Bailey, Ian Badham, Paul Diment 32; J. Moffat 19.

Ben Owens, Jon Webb, Andrew Muskett, Terry Howells 25; D. Roberts 19.

TENBY CLUB FINALS

Club competitions had recently reached fever pitch, as the quarter-finals and semi-finals had to be played through one of the busiest periods of our bowling calendar. Even some of the finals had to be played prior to finals weekend, which added to the congestion.

The programme of finals was in itself a work of art, spread over the Saturday and Sunday, the main cause being our internationals, not surprisingly, reaching many finals. Club captain Patrick Currie was in a stunning six finals. Ceris Hewlings was in five and Paul Diment was in four. Each went on to win three trophies - magnificent!

Blessed with fine weather and excellent organisation, we witnessed a lot of quality bowling worthy of finals. Young Joe Richards was masterful, winning both of the Under 18s trophies. At the other end of the age scale, Sam McNeilly made it look easy as he cruised home in the new trophy, The Last Gasp Trophy (Over 70s).

Amongst the most exciting finals was the W. F. Jones two-wood triples, ranked highly, as it was too close to call for the whole game.

Equally exciting was the tussle for the Bill and Gladys Gray Cup, which was nip and tuck in a long game. Likewise, the New Pavilion Cup Four Wood Pairs went right to the last end to produce the winners.

FIVE ARCHES 58 PEMBROKE DOCK A 68

What is it about playing at the Dock that affects the Tenby sides. They certainly are the bogey side for the Seasiders.

This was a Diment Cup game played over 18 ends due to the lateness of the season.

Roy Powling and his men, although only scoring on seven ends, racked up some big counts to ease home by two shots.

This was one more than Mike and his crew who started off with a bang, being 10 shots to four up after eight ends; then it was sturggle time as the home rink came back at the visitors, taking the lead in the game for the first time on the penultimate end. Again the boys held their nerve, for Craig to pull in two great woods and seal a one shot victory.

It was nip and tuck for Ray Holly and his crew, who finally conceded defeat by five shots.

Battling Dai King Thomas and his rink lost out over the last few ends to go down by eight shots.

The game was notable for two firsts: Mike's rink were first off the green, and who would have bet on that, and Craig bought the captain a pint after the game; he had been threatening to do it all season, and finally relented!

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Pembroke Dock skips only):

R. Hurlow, M. Donoghue, D. Silcox, D. King Thomas 12; G. Bann 20.

J. Taylor, J. Best, B. Barnikel, R. Holly 12; N. Firman 17.
