HAVERFORDWEST 92

TENBY 62

This was a Wednesday night match in the Carruthers Shield competition, with the Jones and Jones sponsored Tenby team coming up against Haverfordwest for the first time this season.

Tenby fielded much the same team from the previous weekend's good start, with the exception of Lee Richards returning after his over the border 'Cumbrian sausage run'.

On the first rink, Terry Howells who had been promoted to skip, never recovered from a poor start and bowed out with a 15 shot defeat against Dave Jones.

Paul Diment's foursome had a tough battle and ended up with a hard-earned draw against skip John Dockerty. Terry Preston and Bill Bailey played solid up front with Wigan coming in as third, who still openly admitted he was not firing on all cylinders.

Mal Bishop and his rink just did not get going, as Webby stated it was just one of those nights, they succumbed to an 18 shot defeat.

Pat Currie's rink was the only plus of the night, with a close fought three shot victory, with the whole rink having a steady game.

This turned out to be one of Tenby's heaviest defeats for quite a while and credit must go to Haverfordwest for bowling excellently. Even playing in the fading light Tenby could have no excuses for this poor showing.

Rink scores: (Tenby first, Haverfordwest skips only):

Ian Badham, Lee Richards, Dai Newth, Terry Howells 10; D. Jones 25.

Terry Preston, Bill Bailey, Andrew Muskett, Paul Diment 15; J. Dockerty 15.

Sam McNeilly, Jon Webb, John Baggott, Malcolm Bishop 9; C. Jones 27.

Dai Spencer, Dave Morgan, Peter Day, Pat Currie 28; P. Jenkins 25.

TENBY 79 MILFORD HAVEN 73

It was back to League competition on the Saturday for the Jones and Jones Tenby team still licking their wounds from Wednesday night's defeat by Haverfordwest.

The day's opponents were Milford Haven who were well up for this encounter with Tenby.

Tenby had one change from Wednesday's team, with Alan Redman coming in for Dai Newth, who was off to sunny Spain, maybe they will understand him over there!

On rink one, Pat 'I'll say a few words in the bar after' Currie and his men had a comfortable 14 shot victory over the experienced Ernie Sturley. Pat was back to something like his old self, putting up some important bowls throughout the game.

Paul's rink suffered their first defeat of the season, but kept the score down to only a four shot loss.

Mal Bishop and his rink also went down to a seven shot defeat. Webby was unavailable for comment!

So it all went down to the rink led by Terry Howells consisting of Ian Badham, 'the evergreen' Bill Bailey and Dave Morgan. They had a great tussle against B. Howells, just running out three shot winners, with the lads pulling off a four on the last end to ensure victory for both rink and team.

Captain Pat was well pleased with his side, who had to dig in to clinch victory, reiterating the classic statement of 'there are no easy games in this league any more'. Thanks to match sponsor Ashley Hooper.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Milford Haven skips only):

Dai Spencer, Alan Redman, Peter Day, Pat Currie 23; E. Sturley 9.

Lee Richards, Terry Preston, Andrew Muskett, Paul Diment 21; R. Thomas 25.

Sam McNeilly, Jon Webb, John Baggott, Malcolm Bishop 15; P. Collins 22.

Ian Badham, Bill Bailey, Dave Morgan, Terry Howells 20; B. Howells 17.

TENBY 79 HAVERFORDWEST 74

May is always a very busy month for Pembrokeshire bowlers, so Sunday saw the Jones and Jones sponsored Tenby team back on the green for an encounter with Haverfordwest.

This was a chance to gain revenge for the aforementioned mid-week defeat.

Pat Currie was again on rink one, and at half-time was in front 14-7, but then the wheels fell off and they failed to score on eight consecutive ends crashing to a six shot defeat. The front end of Dai Spencer and Alan Redman were quick to apologise for a poor second-half, resulting in Peter and Pat having nothing to work off.

The rink skipped by Terry Howells rink consisted of Ian Badham, the in-form Bill Bailey and Dave Morgan who were narrowly defeated by two shots. The turning point was dropping a five on the penultimate end.

Paul Diment's men had a bit of a lazy start, but after tea, the front end of Lee Richards, who had two sugars, and well-dressed Terry Preston upped their game a gear. With a solid performance from the happier Andrew Muskett, and Paul in absolute magnificent form, the rink ran out 13 shot winners.

Mal Bishop and his rink of Sam McNeilly, Jon Webb and John Baggott ended up the last foursome on the green. With the match totally in the balance, Mal was four behind coming into the last end. As the final end progressed the lads somehow managed to haul back the four shots required to give the rink a draw and Tenby overall victory. Mal even had the luxury of declining to bowl his last bowl in the interest of the team result.

Tenby still remain unbeaten after four league games, but they are still not up and running yet to their full capacity. Special thank you to match sponsor Peter Day.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Haverfordwest, skips only):

Dai Spencer, Alan Redman, Peter Day, Pat Currie 19; D. Jones 25.

Ian Badham, Bill Bailey, Dave Morgan, Terry Howells 17; P. Jenkins 19.

Lee Richards, Terry Preston, Andrew Muskett, Paul Diment 25; J. Dockerty 12.

Sam McNeilly, Jon Webb, John Baggott, Malcolm Bishop 18; C. Jones 18.

TENBY LADIES 32 MILFORD 38

Tenby ladies played their first game of the season on Saturday against Milford Haven Ladies.

The weather was good and despite losing, the game was most enjoyable.

Rink scores: Tenby first, Milford Haven skips only:

P. Jones, P. Best, Lon Evans, J. Dorling 20; M. Carter 17.

J. Salisbury, M. Skyrme, M. Burn, P. Barnikel 12; J. Navas 21.

THURSDAY LEAGUE

More names are needed for the Thursday evening league.

A number of the club's young members have signed up for this year's event, but more adults are required to ensure it takes place.

Depending on the availability of players and the green, the league may not be held on a Thursday every week.

A list with more information and for names is on the notcieboard in the clubhouse.

PEMBROKE DOCK 'A' 72 (10 pts)

FIVE ARCHES 71 (4 pts)

The Five Arches set off for their first league game of the season against newly promoted Pembroke Dock 'A'.

First casualty upon arrival was the fact that the captain had not brought his blue playing shirt with him. The situation was saved when Eric Dorling, brought in at the last moment saved the day when he offered his.

A few ribald comments: "I've got a spare shirt at home", and "shall I bring two next match in case you forgot again."

Enough frivolity let's talk about the game. Dave King Thomas and his merry men showed no mercy by canning the home rink by 13 shots. Bill Russell maintained his good form from the pre-season friendlies, by bowling well again. Dave himself was in fine form.

After 10 ends, Mike and his crew were eight shots up. Playing on the notorious end rink, with front men Johnathan Hubbard and Gerald Hewitt showing the way to the home lead and second, Peter and Mike were consolidating at the back. Three ends when the rub of the green certainly didn't favour the visitors saw the Pater side come back to 15-all.

But the seasiders kept cool and snatched four shots over the last two ends, thanks to superb woods from Gerald and Peter, saw them home by two shots.

Roy and his rink shot into a early lead but the heavier conditions were not too the liking of the Arches men, and despite some heroics from Gwyn and Roy they finally went down by seven shots.

Ray Holly, who was playing his first game for nearly two weeks, due to a foot injury and his rink was always on the back foot against the home side, and eventually lost out by nine shots.

To say the Arches team were gutted by the one shot defeat is not expressing it too firmly. The Pater side were jubilant, and justifiably so, but with a little 'rub of the green', which is with you one week and not the next, would have made a big difference.

Next up is Pembroke Dock tomorrow (Saturday).

Rink scores were (Arches first; Pembroke Dock 'A' skips only):

W. Russell, J. Best, D. Silcox, D. King Thomas 26; D.Halwab 13.

J. Hubbard, G. Hewitt, P. Hooper, M. Crockford 21; M. Sillard 19.

T. Powling, E. Dorling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 15; R. Hissey 22.

J. Richards, G. Hill, B. Barnikel, R. Holly 9; G. Bann 18.
