WELSH PAIRS CHAMPIONS
Two of the Tenby club members, both internationals of some standing, Paul Diment and Patrick Currie, once again were all conquering in the Welsh finals at Llandrindod Wells last week.
This time they beat all-comers in the Welsh pairs open competition, to become the Welsh Pairs Champions for 2002. A magnificent achievement by any standards, enabling the Tenby Bowling Club and Pembroke county to bathe in the reflected glory of these very fine bowlers. It is fair to say that they received a hero's welcome when they returned to the club Friday evening.
Talk soon turned to the next stage, the British Isles Championships, which are at Ayr next year. Both Paul and Patrick achieved the impossible two years ago when, with Peter Day and Andrew Muskett, they won the British Isles Fours Trophy, the impressive Edinburgh Cup. Can they conquer all again?
FIVE ARCHES LADIES 64
WHITLAND LADIES 26
An impressive 38-shot victory was chalked up by the Five Arches ladies on Monday night when they played Whitland at home.
Vera Williams and her rink led the charge, beating Elizabeth Pratt and company by 25 shots, while Ceris Hewlings skipped her rink to a 13-shot win over the Cally Jones quartet.
The Five Arches ladies, sponsored by Stena Line, still have several games left to play and captain Pat Stubbs and vice-captain Alison Redman are hoping for a big finish to the season.
Rink scores (Arches first, Whitland skips only) were:
B. Russell, V. James, A. Redman, V. Williams 35; E. Pratt 10.
P. Stubbs, M. Cooke, A. Owens, C. Hewlings 29; C. Jones 16.
TENBY 76 NEYLAND 74
The Jones and Jones sponsored Tenby team travelled from sunny Tenby on Saturday fully equipped with polo shirts and sun glasses for this first match in an important weekend for the boys, but by the end of the game everyone bar none ended up looking like John West on one of his worst trips.
On Andrew's rink (which Lee was convinced had been dressed with soap), Ray, John and Muskey battled on through the rather inclement weather only to lose by five shots.
Paul's rink had a ding dong battle up until the 12th end when Neyland had a mid-game surge, but, Tenby managed to stage a brave come back just failing by three shots.
Pat led by example on rink five, playing some excellent bowls and backed up by Sam, Reders and Peter, they clinched their match by one shot.
Dave's rink always managed to keep one step ahead of their opponents and with some good all round bowling, came out victors by nine shots.
Everyone was now waiting to hear the result of the other important game concerning Tenby and, after having worn a trench in the changing room by pacing up and down, Pat cracked and 'phoned up which turned out to be good news for Tenby.
Rink scores (Tenby first, Neyland skips only):
L. Richards, R. Holly, J. Baggott, A. Muskett 15; G. Robson 20.
D. Spencer, T. Preston, J. Webb, P. Diment 18; D. Sutton 21.
S. McNeilly. A. Redman, P. Day, P. Currie 18; B. Barrett 17.
I. Badham, B. Owens, D. Newth, D. Morgan 25; R. A. Evans 16.
TENBY 96 PENDINE 59
Sunday saw day two of this crucial weekend of league games for the Jones and Jones sponsored Tenby team, hoping to gain as many points as possible from this match against Pendine. The sun was shining, the green was as usual superb, so it was up to the boys to perform.
Andrew's rink were more settled with a faster green and after a sweaty passage, managed to come out winners by two shots.
Yet again Dave's rink always managed to keep their noses in front, and after a late surge, won by six shots.
Pat's boys were in top form again and after some top bowling came out 29-9 victors.
After dropping a three on the first end, Paul's rink got into the groove and with their opponents only scoring on two of the first 10 ends, steady bowling saw them win by nine shots.
Taking nothing away from the fine bowling and hard fight put up by Pendine, 14 points was what Tenby were hoping for and, hopefully, this has put them in good stead for the league.
Last but, by no means least, best wishes to Terry. Hope to see you with us soon.
Rink scores (Tenby first, Pendine skips only):
L. Richards, R. Holly, J. Baggott, A. Muskett 24; D. Morgan 21.
I. Badham, B. Owens, D. Newth, D. Morgan 20; J. Lloyd 14.
S. McNeilly, A. Redman, P. Day, P. Currie 29; G. Edwards 9.
D. Spencer, T. Preston, J. Webb, P. Diment 24; R. James 15.
WHITLAND 76
TENBY FIVE ARCHES 81
The Stena sponsored Five Arches played at Whitland last Saturday and after a great game of bowls came out winners by five shots, and an overall points tally of 12. This win has confirmed the Arches will play in Division One once again next season, and the players must be proud of their efforts in securing this victory over an in-form Whitland side.
Conditions were not good, as steady rain persisted from the 10th end onwards, but the green bowled well and was a tribute to the hard work of the Whitland players who look after the maintenance.
The Arches had to make one very late change after John Tyler sustained an injury during the morning, and all of his team-mates would like to wish him a speedy recovery and see him back on the green shortly. Reg Thake was given 10 minutes notice to play, but once again came to the aid of the captain and proved what a good team man he is; thank you Reg.
All the rinks played well. After being 13 shots down overall after the 10th end, there was a surge in the second half, especially by Keith Hubbard and his rink, who clawed their way back from four shots to 14 behind, to clinch a great win by 24-21. Jock Best had a fine game in this rink.
Mike Crockford's rink was always in contention against the Steve Reese foursome and held off a spirited challenge by the Whitland boys to get home by three shots. Max Donoghue and young Craig Guymer had excellent games up front and made the job of skip an easy one.
On rink one, the captain had a tough time against the formidable Glyndwr Thomas squad, for whom Dai Davies was in excellent form. After being five shots in arrears at halfway, the Arches rink rattled up 16 shots to Whitland's five in the second half to run out winners by six shots. Billy Russell, Tony Powling and Gwyn Beynon all had games of great quality and gave great support to the skip.
The rink of Dave King Thomas had a hard battle with Colin Wynn and his boys and at one stage were leading by five shots, but the rain seemed to affect them in the latter stages, and unfortunately they dropped 11 shots in three ends which in effect cost them the game. This rink shared the last two ends with their opponents and definitely helped to win the game overall.
Rink scores (Five Arches first, Whitland skips only):
B. Barnikel, R. Thake, D. Silcox, D. King-Thomas 17; C. Wynn 24.
M. Donoghue, C. Guymer, R. Hughes, M. Crockford 18; S. Reese 15.
B. Russell, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 22; Glyndwr Thomas 16.
R. Hurlow, G. Hill, J. Best, K. Hubbard 24; P. Wills 21.
TENBY LADIES 58 NEYLAND 36
Tenby Ladies travelled to Neyland on a very wet Saturday afternoon. Mair's rink found it hard going with the long jacks. Joan's rink managed it and kept ahead most of the time and won by 12 shots which gave us an overall win with four points.
Rink scoes (Tenby first, Neyland skips only):
P. Best, M. Draper, M. Morris, M. Marquiss 16; V. Hubbard 26.
J. Salisbury, P. Jones, P. Barnikel, J. Dorling 22; M. Garder 10.
TENBY LADIES 38 CLEDDAU 38
Tenby Ladies played Cleddau on a lovely sunny afternoon, but the weather did not help Mair's rink as they lost by 12 shots. Pauline's rink once again played well and managed to win by 12 shots which gave us an honourable draw and three points
Rink scores (Tenby first, Cleddau scores only):
M. Burn, P. Best, M. Morris, M. Marquiss 16; Cleddau 28.
P. Jones, L. Evans, J. Dorling, P. Barnikel 22; Cleddau 10.
