FISHGUARD 32

Tenby Ladies travelled to Fishguard on Wednesday afternoon; the weather was perfect and also the bowls.

Both rinks were well up at tea-time. They drifted a little afterwards, but in the end Pauline's rink won by seven shots and Mair by three, giving them six points.

To celebrate, they finished off the day with a fish supper at The Famous Fish and Chip Shop - the perfect ending to a good day.

FIVE ARCHES 43

After a break of two weeks, the Five Arches ladies bounced back into league action on Monday night when they picked up a maximum six points from their game against St. Issell's.

Rene Silcox, Pat Stubbs, Val James and Chris Morgan got off to a great start on the Saundersfoot green, picking up a six on the first end.

At 10 ends, the Arches were 13-9 ahead and they managed to hold on to their lead throughout the second half to win 22-16.

Burney Russell and Alison Redman bowled well up front for Ceris Hewlings and skip Vera Williams, who had a cracking game.

Vera and her crew were 10 shots up at the 14th end, but despite a spirited comeback from St. Issell's, they squeezed home with a one shot victory.

The next game for the Stena Line sponsored Arches squad is on Monday, July 8, when they play the Tenby ladies at 2.30 pm.

TENBY 111 ST. ISSELL'S 59

Dave Morgan's rink had a tough game which was played in good spirit, but with a fine all round performance they managed to come good in the second half for a 10-shot victory.

Steady bowling from the start ensured Andrew's rink was always in control of the game. Dave Robb tried hard to stem the tide, but another comfortable victory was never really in doubt.

Ultimate bowling was how Webbie described Paul's rink's performance. All four bowled well to come away with a 14-shot win.

Pat's boy's had a struggle on their hands for most of the match, but they found another gear for the last five ends to come away winners by three shots.

Rink scores (Tenby first, St. Issell's skips only):

L. Guymer, I. Badham, J. Baggott, D. Morgan 28; J. Morran 18.

For the first time this season this match was played in warm sunshine and the conditions were excellent.

NEYLAND 64

TENBY FIVE ARCHES 86

The Five Arches continued their recent good form with an excellent win at Neyland last Saturday to collect a further 12 points to lift them further up the league.

Neyland is always a tough venue to get a result, but the Five Arches squad handled the green and conditions extremely well and ran out winners by 22 shots.

The only rink to find difficulty was that of Doug Silcox; they found themselves trailing 24-3 at 15 ends, but came back strongly to cut the deficit to 14 shots. The other three rinks all had good wins.

The young players in Mike Crockford's rink, Craig Guymer and Robert Hughes, ably backed up by Arthur Grimbaldeston, had outstanding games and made the skip's job an easy one.

Other players to perform well on the day were Gwyn Beynon, Billy Russell, Tony Powling and John Tyler, not forgetting Bert Barnikel, who in the unaccustomed position of lead had a more than useful game.

This Sunday sees the Stena sponsored Five Arches host their compatriots from Tenby, and hope to put up a better performance than when they last met in early May. Both sides need the points, Tenby to consolidate their position at the top of Division One, and the Five Arches to continue their rise to a mid-table position. A keen game is expected.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Neyland skips only)

B. Russell, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 26; A. King 10.

C. Guymer, A. Grimbaldeston, R. Hughes, M. Crockford 21; B. Barrett 12.

B. Barnikel, J. Tyler, G. Hill, D. King-Thomas 27; R. A. Evans 16.

R. Hurlow, M. Donoghue, J. Best, D. Silcox 12; D. Sutton 26.
