TENBY LADIES

Tenby ladies started their first match of 2002 against Five Arches. Not surprisingly, this is always a keen encounter and every one was eager to start.

Rink one, skipped by Mair Marquiss with Mary Morris, Phylis Jones and Lon Evans, got off to a good start and led all the way against the Five Arches rink, skipped by Helen Baggott, and finished 26-10.

Rink two, skipped by Joan Dorling with Pauline Barnikel, Peggy Best and Margaret Skyrme, did not have such a good a start and were 12-1 down after eight ends. But after a welcome cup of tea (served by the men) - thank you men - they managed to pull back a little and finished 14-21 - just seven shots down. So well done ladies.

WHITLAND 63 TENBY 103

Tenby, sponsored by Jones and Jones, travelled to Whitland for their first encounter of the season (writes Woody).

When asked for his comments on his rink's performance Dave stated the blindingly obvious; he said it rained. When pushed further, he said it was swings and roundabouts and the team covered for one another very well to come away with a very good win.

On rink three, Andrew's summary of the game was that they ground out a good win.

On rink two, Pat's boys came up against Colin Wynn who was awesome. Pat said when it started to rain he walked on water.

On rink one, Paul said all his rink were brilliant. A special mention must go to Bomber Bailey who handled the conditions excellently.

On Sunday, the Jones and Jones Tenby team played Stena Five Arches in a club derby.

On rink one, Andrew's front end played well and in the second half they all changed gear to come away with a very good win.

On rink three, Dai Spencer had his best game yet, and it was welcome back to Terry Preston, which left Paul and Webby with nothing to do.

On rink four, Pat was pleased to see his front end playing well again, and he followed this with an excellent exhibition of his own.

On rink five, Dai Morgan said it was a hard game, but John Baggot had a good game which saw them come out with a good win of six shots.

MIXED FORTUNES FOR ARCHES LADIES

After a disappointing start to the season, the Five Arches ladies picked up three points from their match at Haverfordwest on Saturday.

Following defeat against the Tenby ladies two days before, the Arches, sporting their new Stena sponsored blue shirts, were determined not to return home empty handed from their game against Priory.

And although Ceris Hewlings and her rink went down by four shots, Vera Williams skipped her foursome to a 20-16 success, resulting in the teams sharing the spoils.

On Tuesday night, the Five Arches ladies beat St. Issell's and bagged four more points.

Alison Redman skipped her girls to an 11-shot victory over Ann Lewis, sealing the overall win, while Vera Williams was narrowly beaten by Beryl L. Lewis.

Rink scores against Tenby ladies (Arches first, Tenby skips only) were:

P. Stubbs, R. Handicott, G. Gray, H. Baggott 10; M. Marquiss 26.

B. Russell, M. Cooke, A. Redman, V. James 21; J. Dorling 14.

Rink scores against Priory (Arches first, Priory skips only) were:

STENA FIVE ARCHES

Last weekend, the Five Arches commenced their league programme with two hard matches, against Haverfordwest away on the Saturday and at Tenby in the local derby on the Sunday.

In both matches they acquitted themselves well, but with little to show for a lot of endeavour.

At Haverfordwest they came up against a side who were out for revenge after conceding the double to the Arches last season, and in a hard fought game the home side came out on top by a margin of 17 shots, 90-73, in a rain-affected match.

All the rinks performed well, with Gwyn Beynon and his squad having a great game against the strong Roy Fairhurst foursome, sharing the spoils 17-all. Bert Barnikel guided his rink to a commendable two-shot defeat against Phil John, while Roy Powling and Mike Crockford went down by seven and eight shots, respectively.

All in all, a good performance against a strong home team.

In this his first game of the season, Robert Hughes showed good form in Mike Crockford rink, playing some good shots with confidence, and looks to have a bright future in the game.

Rink scores (Arches first, Haverfordwest skips only):

B. Russell, N. Dickinson, M. Donoghue, R. Powling 21; P. D. S. Jenkins 28.

R. Thake, J. Best, A. Grimaldeston, B. Barnikel 21; P. A. John 23.

R. Hurlow, G. Stubbs, G. Hill, G. Beynon 17; R. Fairhurst 17.

J. Taylor, T. Powling, R. Hughes, M. Crockford 14; D.Jones 22.

The Five Arches then tackled the formidable Tenby side on the Sunday and were soundly beaten by 49 shots on a lightning fast green. At halfway the difference was only 15 shots, but in the second half, the home side (Tenby) cruised away to prove what a good side they are and retain their unbeaten record, final score being 103-54 to Tenby.

Best of the Five Arches rinks was captain Roy Powling's, who had a good battle with Dave Morgan's foursome, losing by six shots, Mike Crockford fought hard against Pat Currie, losing by 10 shots.

The other two rinks capitulated after a promising start, Keith Hubbard's rink being only three shots down after 10 ends. The Bert Barnikel rink, after an excellent beginning, were leading by six shots at 14 ends, but had a forgettable finish, dropping 22 shots to Andrew Muskett and his rink over the last seven ends. This inflated the shots against column in the overall match score.

Rink scores (Five Arches first) were as follows:

B. Russell, N. Dickinson, G. Beynon, R. Powling 18; P. Mearns, P. Hooper, J. Baggott, D. Morgan 24.

R. Thake, J. Best, A. Grimbaldeston, B. Barnikel 12; S. McNeilly, B. Owen, I. Badham, A Muskett 28.

R. Hurlow, G. Stubbs, G. Hill, K. Hubbard 10; D. Spencer, T. Preston, J. Webb, P. Diment 27.

J. Taylor, T. Powling, D. King Thomas, M. Crockford 14; L. Richards, A. Redman, P. Day, P. Currie 24.

The Five Arches captain would like to thank Goscar skipper Reg Thake for his assistance in providing cover for his team; his help is very much appreciated.

The next league match will be against Pendine at Tenby on Saturday and the Five Arches will be looking for a much-improved performance.

All of his team-mates in the Five Arches squad would like to wish Bert Barnikel a speedy recovery from his recent setback and would like to see him back on the green as soon as possible.

But nevertheless, the Arches won overall by six shots and returned home with four more points to add to their tally.
