GOSCAR 64

PEMBROKE DOCK A 107

On Saturday, Goscar played their last game this year (writes R.T.). The team of Pembroke Dock was as usual a very good side, but the game was played in very good humour despite the wet conditions. We did get one winning rink thanks to the good bowling of Graham Stubbs and his rink, well done.

Rink scores (Goscar first, Pembroke Dock skips only):

A. Kelly, A. Vincent, A. Grimbaldeston, J. Taylor 13; M. Gillard 35.

A. Rootes, A. Fursse, K. Delabertouche, L. Hilling 14; G. Bann 30.

D. Watkins, J. King, J. Hubbard, G. Stubbs 25; D. Halward 22.

S. Hinton, E. Dorling, R. Thake, B. Bailey 12; B. Morgan 20.

I would like to thank all who played for Goscar this year for their commitment and support and the way they kept their good humour even when we were getting a good hammering. I have enjoyed myself this year and hope the lads winter well and come back next year with the same frame of mind and good humour, as that is what it is all about.

Well done all, it's been a pleasure to be your captain this year.

PS. Still got some hair left, but a litter greyer.

HAVERFORDWEST 75 (6)

Last weekend, the Tenby team played their final two league matches. On Saturday, they entertained a strong Haverfordwest side.

On rink one, Dai Spencer, Alan Redman, Peter Day and Pat Currie put in a good performance and were denied victory on the last end when, holding six, their opposing skip drew third bowl to sneak a two-shot win, 19-21.

On rink two, Ian Badham, Ben Owens, Simon Evans and Sparky were in superb form all afternoon as they destroyed Dave Jones's foursome to win 30-10, which was to prove vital as they were the only winning home rink.

Paul Mearns, Terry Preston, John Baggott and Paul Diment were to suffer a rare off day as they only managed to win eight ends, but only lost by six, 13-19, against a strong Hafod rink.

Finally, Dave King Thomas, Dave Morgan, John Webb and Andrew Muskett got off to a bad start, 15-2 down, but a good fightback saw them recover to only trail by five at one stage, which helped the team take the lead for the first time in the match. Muskie lost 17-25, but the team secured a narrow four-shot win. After the game, both sides were treated to a superb Alan Redman currie.

NEYLAND 56 (2)

On Sunday, Tenby travelled to Neyland for their last league game of the season. On a heavy and sometimes tricky green, the team played well.

The rink of Keith Deli, Terry Preston, John Baggott and Paul Diment were in brilliant form and soon shot into a 16-0 lead and ran out winners 36-10.

Also in great form were Dai Spencer, Alan Redman, Peter Day and Pat Currie, who had a big win, 29-9, against Dick Evans.

Ian Badham, Ben Owens, Dave King Thomas and Dave Morgan were always in control against Alan King and romped home 25-16.

Bert Barnikel, Peter Hooper, John Webb and skip Andrew Muskett were up against Bill Barrett, who consistently saved or made shots against them. Andrew has had some terrible luck of late and this was summed up on the last end when he played a magnificent bowl to trail the jack for five, but agonisingly lodged onto a Neyland bowl to give them a four-shot victory, 17-21.

This win should probably see the team end as runners-up again.

Thanks to Jones and Jones Solicitors for the shirt sponsorship and to all Tenby match sponsors for the season.

NEYLAND 64 (2 pts)

STENA FIVE ARCHES 97 (12 pts)

The last game of the season saw the Stena Line sponsored Five Arches travel over the bridge to meet the boys from Brunel Quay. It was a real end of season day, with the rain starting to come down soon after the match started.

To add to the autumnal feel, on the adjoining field Neyland were doing battle with St. Davids at rugby.

Despite the chill in the air, the welcome at Neyland, as always, was a warm one... and the raffle prizes were excellent!

Lee Richards was the recipient of a large basket of fruit when his number came up trumps. He also carried his good fortune onto the green when he produced one of his best games of the year.

The green was heavier than at Sutton Gardens, but there were no complaints from the visitors as they ran out winners by 33 shots.

Stand-in skip Dave Rice marshalled his rink well to record a fine 14-shot victory over Dick Evans. At the 13th end they were 24 shots to three up, with the Neyland rink pulling back another 10 shots over the next seven ends, but Dave and his men kept their nerve to steal the last end.

Again on the 13th end, Mike and his crew were leading by nine shots, only to score four more over the last few ends, but still came away with a four-shot win. In the difficult conditions, the rink played well as a unit, to end a good run in the premier division.

It was nip and tuck for Ray Holly and his men against Gordon Robson, with the final measure going against the visitors to leave them down by one shot.

Roy Powling and his rink roared back to pick up two counts of five and one of four to record the biggest win of the day by 16 shots.

This completed the double over the Neyland outfit for the Five Arches side and also saw them getting to 100 points in their first season back in the top division. Who knows what next season will bring, time will only tell.

Rink scores (Five Arches first, Neyland skips only):

D. Silcox, J. Tyler, L. Richards, M. Crockford 21; B. Barrett 17.

R. Hurlow, J. Best, K. Hubbard, R. Holly 20; G. Robson 21.

N. Dickinson, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 29; D. Sutton 13.

W. Russell, G. Crawford, M. Donoghue, D. Rice 27; R. Evans 13.

Tonight (Friday), any members of the Arches squad are welcome to join an end of season get-together starting at the club around seven o'clock and then a drink and eats at the Tenby House Hotel, where the team's trophies will be presented.

GODALMING 145

This happy band of mixed bowlers toured the county of Pembroke last week. They finished their tour playing on the superb Tenby green.

Having used the club's facilities all week, they were very impressed with the friendly reception they received around the county and in particular at the Tenby club.

Praise for our bowling surface was freely given, not for the first time this year, a credit to our hard working greenkeeper, Chris Jenkins.

The game itself looked like being a comfortable win for Tenby, but for one disastrous rink which was on the receiving end of a very severe battering of high class bowling.

Rink results (Tenby first, visiting skips only):

M. Skyrme, T. Kelly, L. Richards, J. Dorling 16; R. Webb 20.

J. Kelly, K. Bliss, G. Crawford, B. Bailey 24; L. Chruzcz 14.

MILFORD (SURREY) 142

On Sunday afternoon, beneath an overcast sky, Tenby played host to Milford Bowling Club from Guildford, Surrey, in a mixed friendly match on the first day of the Milford team's week's tour of clubs in the area.

At the start of the match, captain of Tenby for the day, Alan Rootes, welcomed his opposite number Margaret Punter and her fellow club members on behalf of the Tenby team, wishing them a good game and the hope that the cloud would lift and sunshine prevail.

All rinks saw excellent bowling by both sides, with skip Jock Best and his team on rink five holding his opposition off with a fine win of 14 shots and skip Pauline Barnikel and her team on rink two having a closely fought game, but coming from behind in the last three ends to win by a well deserved five shots.

Despite the other four Tenby rinks going down, resulting in a handsome win for Milford of 39 shots overall, excellent camaraderie prevailed throughout the whole of the game, which did see a couple of lengthy blue sky and bright sunny periods before close of play.

In the clubhouse after the game, both team captains were full of praise for their fellow bowlers and the spirit in which the game had been played, with captain Alan congratulating captain Margaret and her team on their victory, and giving special mention of skips Jock Best and Pauline Barnikel's winning rinks.

Captain Margaret, in her valedictory speech, took the opportunity to voice the opinion, shared by her team members, for the warm hospitality shown by the Tenby club members, the excellent condition of the green, the Tenby ladies for providing tea and biscuits at the tea break and Carol behind the bar for letting her ring the bell for the closing speeches as well as the swift manner in which she coped with the calls for drinks at the end of the game.

Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only):

Gerald Hewitt, Steve Hinton, Dennis Watkins, Joan Dorling 17; J. Miller 27.

Thelma Brace, Jean Kelly, Graham Stubbs, Pauline Barnikel 26; Jim Fisk 21.

DEVON LADIES TOUR 127

Monday afternoon again brought a touring team to the club to complete a very busy weekend period. A Tenby mixed team were to play a game against the all-lady Devon Ladies touring side.

The weather was still threatening to do it's worst, but this time we were to be lucky and the rain held off.

Captain for the day, John King, on behalf of the Tenby team, welcomed president Trisha Lintern and her ladies, who came from various clubs in Devon and included many Devon county bowlers and officials, and wished them a friendly game and fine weather for the afternoon.

All skips reported that they had seen some wonderful bowling from both sides and the friendly atmosphere could be felt all across the green.

Bert Barnikel and his rink had a very fine win, followed very closely by Pauline Barnikel and her rink. Lee Richards and his rink fought bravely to come back from a 15-5 deficit at the tea break to win by one shot and Gwyn Beynon's rink finished with a hard earned draw.

Other Tenby rinks were not quite so fortunate, but in most cases the score did not reflect the high standard of bowling from both sides.

After the game, when congratulatory drinks were being supped in the clubhouse, both captain John and president Trisha thanked all for the wonderful sporting game and were happy that the weather held fair.

The visitors were very congratulatory with regards the condition of the green and the welcome they had received from all at Tenby and were looking forward to their county game on Friday.

They both thanked the ladies concerned with the tea arrangements during the game and Carol's hard work behind the bar.

Captain John said that he was very thankful to all Tenby members who had supported the Tenby friendly fixture selectors and hoped very sincerely that they would have the same support for the remaining friendly fixtures during the remainder of the very short but busy season.

Rink scores (Tenby team first, visiting skips only):

Thelma Brace, Mary Draper, Graham Stubbs, Pauline Barnikel 28; M. Burt 20.

Gerald Hewitt, Meryl Cooke, A. Grimbaldeston, Lee Richards 21; C. Bolton 20.

MANAGEMENT

MEETING

A management meeting will be held next Tuesday, September 11, at 7 pm.

FIVE ARCHES LADIES 44

ST. ISSELL'S 33

The Five Arches ladies beat St. Issell's by 11 shots on Tuesday evening.

Audrey Owens and her rink returned a 12-shot winning card over Amanda Lewis and were unable to play the last end due to the failing light.

On the next rink, Vera Williams and company had been in front for most of the match, but the game went right down to the wire with the two sides going into the last end at 18-all.

But, alas, the Arches could not hold on to their lead and they were pipped by just one shot.

Rink scores (Arches first, St. Issell's skips only):

P. Stubbs, H. Baggott, V. James, A. Owens 26; A. J. Lewis 14.

A. Redman, G. Gray, R. Silcox, V. Williams 18; B. L. Lewis 19.

The Five Arches ladies play their last league game of the season on Monday against Milford Ladybirds.
