STENA FIVE

ARCHES 71 (12 pts)

PENDINE 67 (2)

What is it about playing at home that affects the Stena line sponsored Five Arches side. Against a depleted bottom-of-the-table Pendine side, they were confident of taking the spoils of victory. True they won and collected 12 points, but in a low scoring game they struggled against a determined side.

Earlier in the season, the Arches had secured maximum points at Pendine against much stronger opposition.

It was a late spurt over the closing ends that clinched a four-shot victory for Roy Powling and his rink.

With Ron Hurlow and Jock Best getting the better of their opponents, it was visiting skip Jim Lloyd who kept his side in contention against Ray Holly and his men, which saw the home side win by two shots.

A last-minute call up for Denis Watkins saw Sam Mac's rink having to adjust, with the recalled Maxie Donoghue at third. It was close, but visiting captain Arwel Edwards finished on top by eight shots.

Although holding shots of three or more, it was visiting third Roy Mason who caused the damage for Almo Thomas and his rink in their battle against the Mike Crockford quartet. But the greater experience of the home rink saw them home by six shots.

The 12 points were most welcome, but the Arches team could have done their shot difference a world of good if they had bowled to their true potential, but Pendine did not let that happen and credit must be given to them for a gutsy performance. The game was sponsored by the Begelly Arms.

Rink scores (Stena Five Arches first, Pendine skips only):

RAY BRIDGES

Gold Cup week brings a lot of joy and excitement. It is the biggest week in the club's calendar, but the last two years have brought a lot of sadness.

Last year, we tragically lost Ken Hewlings, a former Gold Cup winner, and this year, on the eve of the Gold Cup, we said farewell to another Five Arches stalwart in Ray Bridges.

Ray had fought his illness for over a year, and those who were close to him know that fight was the operative word.

He and his wife Joan were regular visitors to Tenby for many years, and nearly 10 years ago they finally settled in the area and became well respected people in the community.

A retired miner, Ray joined the Bowls Club and was a member of the Five Arches team, of which he was vice-captain three years ago.

A man who spoke his mind, he was devoted to his family, the profession in which he worked, and gave the Five Arches 100 per cent.

He was also passionate about his rugby and loved Wales.

He had the total devotion of his wife Joan, daughters Lorna and Carol and the rest of his family.

I am sure that the whole of the Bowling Club fraternity send their deepest sympathy to Joan and all the family.

GOSCAR 56

ST. KATHERINE'S 93

Goscar may be having a lean spell at the moment, losing two games on the trot without gaining a point, but when I look at their faces around the green the smiles are still there and that is worth many points to me.

Rink scores (Goscar first, St. Kath's skips only):

R. Hine, B. Russell, G. Stubbs, B. Bailey 11; B. Davies 18.

A. Ormond, A. Vincent, K. De La Bertouche, L. Hilling 14; A. Robson 30.

T. Kelly, A. Fursse, A. Grimbaldeston, R. Thake 14; P. Harries 25.

D. Watkins, J. Lester, J. Hubbard, G. Hill 17; D. Joyce 20.

TENBY LADIES 42

PRIORY LADIES 40

Last Saturday, Tenby ladies travelled to Haverfordwest for their game against Priory.

It is said, tea at half-time can make or break a game. On Joan Dorling's rink it certainly helped as they were 10 shots down before the welcome cuppa, then went on to an eight-shot win.

Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect on Mair Marquiss's rink, who were just ahead at tea, but eventually went down by six shots.

The result was an overall win for Tenby by two shots.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Priory skips only):

M. Skyrme, P. Best, P. Barnikel, J. Dorling 24; N. Evans 16.

W. Lamb, P. Jones, M. Morris, M. Marquiss 18; A. Thomas 24.

TENBY LADIES 24

FISHGUARD LADIES 53

Tenby ladies were defeated by 29 shots when they played against Fishguard ladies last Thursday.

Rink scores (Tenby first, Fishguard skips only):

T. Brace, M. Skryme, P. Barnikel, J. Dorling 12; A. Gray 30.

K. Bliss, L. Evans, M. Morris, M. Marquiss 12; G. McFarlane 23.
