TENBY 109 WHITLAND 52
Last week, the Jones and Jones sponsored Tenby team were involved in their first league matches.
On Wednesday evening, Tenby entertained a Whitland side brimming with confidence after their draw with Tenby in the Carruthers.
On rink one, there was a good all-round display by Paul and Co., winning by 10 shots to maintain their unbeaten record.
It was the same again on rink two as Sparky skipped his rink to a 15-shot win over Steve Reese.
Dave Morgan's foursome then gained sweet revenge over Chris Court, winning by 18.
Simon and the boys ensured a clean sweep for the team by winning by 14.
So it was a great start, a 57-shot win, and more importantly a maximum 14 points to set us up for our trip to Saundersfoot last Saturday.
Rink scores (Tenby names only) were as follows:
P. Mearns, P. Hooper, J. Baggott, P. Diment won 25-15.
P. Day, T. Preston, K. King-Thomas, M. Williams won 28-13.
D. Spencer, B. Owens, A. Muskett, D. Morgan won 29-11.
I. Badham, J. Webb, M. John, S. Evans won 27-13.
SAUNDERSFOOT 72 TENBY 88
So it was on to Saundersfoot for our next match, traditionally one of, if not our hardest, fixtures of the season.
Dai, Ben, Muskie and Dave Morgan were up against Steve Poole, but despite matching their opponents for the first 11 ends and the excellent lead play by Dai Spencer, they lost by 13, 24-11.
Next door, Peter, Terry, DKT and Sparky were finding it tough going, losing 11-4 after seven ends, but managed to turn things around after tea to win seven successive ends to beat Myrddin Dennis 23-17.
Bads, Webby, Matthew and Simon were all having dream games as they destroyed the Berwyn Dennis foursome to win handsomely 35-10.
Finally, Paul M, Peter Hoops, John and Paul Diment lost their unbeaten record to Dave Poole, but it must be noted that they kept things tight at the end as Saundersfoot reduced a 19-shot deficit at one stage to just two, before we pulled away again.
So another 10 points for the team, to give us 24 from two games and top spot in the league.
Rink scores (Tenby names only) were as follows:
D. Spencer, B. Owen, A. Muskett, D. Morgan lost 11-24.
P. Day, T. Preston, D. King Thomas, M. Williams won 23-17.
I. Badham, J. Webb, M. Johns, S. Evans won 35-10.
P. Mearns, P. Hooper, J. Baggott, P. Diment lost 19-21.

HAVERFORDWEST 65 STENA FIVE ARCHES 81
Fantastic! Fabulous! What a result for the newly-promoted Stena Line sponsored Five Arches, to win their first game against the league champions.
Everyone in the bowling scene knows how hard it is to win on the Haverfordwest green. Tenby had come away with a win in the Carruthers Cup game, and now the Five Arches emulated them.
The home players were generous in defeat, and sporting on the green.
Going to the game, it was talk of at least trying to take a couple of points by winning two rinks. In the end they could have taken maximum points, as Roy Fairhurst three times sent the jack out of the rink as he killed the ends when the Seasiders were holding counts of three.
Biggest win was by Roy Powling and his men with an 11-shot win over Roger Price.
By the 13th end, captain Ray Holly and his men were 15 shots clear of the home rink, but they held their nerve as the Harfat men clawed back 13 shots over the last eight ends, to win by four shots.
Sam McNeilly, with Lee Richards coming in as a late replacement, finished in almost complete darkness to edge home by three shots over John Docherty.
It was nip and tuck all the way for Mike Crockford and his crew in a low scoring game, with both rinks taking a count of three as the highest scores in the game. Newcomer John Tyler acquitted himself well.
The next day, back on their home soi, the Arches players were congratulated by many of their Tenby colleagues on their achievement. No one was more pleased than the club secretary Bert Barnikel, himself a former Arches player, who was wearing a grin like a contented Siamese cat. He was feeling so happy and contented that he had a momentarily lapse of concentration and nearly allowed four people on the putting green for nothing. Alas for them, it was only momentarily, and he recovered his composure and promptly cajoled them into buying four ice creams!
Rink scores (Stena Five Arches first, Haverfordwest skips only):
R. Hurlow, M. Donoghue, L. Richards, S. McNeilly 22; J. Docherty 19.
G. Crawford, J. Tyler, K. Hubbard, M. Crockford 15; R. Fairhurst 17.
W. Russell, T. Powling, G. Beynon, R. Powling 22; R. Price 11.
P. Watkins, D. Rice, A. Grimbaldeston, R. Holly 22; P. Jenkins 18.
COUNTY TOUR
President Bill Jones, of the Milford Haven club, leads a party of men and women bowlers from the County of Pembroke on their annual week's bowling tour. This year it is to the beautiful resort of Bournemouth.
Coincidently, president-elect Ben Owens, of the Tenby club, had just posted the entry forms for his Plymouth tour in mid-May 2002. There are six games for both the ladies and gents and it looks very good value for the money, with no extras.
1981 was the first time ladies were allowed to bowl on tour, encouraged by the then county president, Trevor Lloyd Jones, of the Tenby club. It was so successful, it has been repeated on every county tour since.
Ben, next year's president, is naturally expecting very good support from his own club (Tenby), but equally would very much like to see members from all other clubs in the county, making it a truly representative county bowling tour.
TENBY LADIES 41 WHITLAND 45
Tenby Ladies were at home to Whitland Ladies on Wednesday evening of last week.
Unfortunately, Joan Dorling's rink was stuck on nine for 10 ends and as a result were unable to make inroads into Whitland's lead. Once again, Mair Marquiss's rink played well in achieving an eight-shot win.
Rink scores (Tenby first, visiting skips only):
L. Evans, P. Jones, M. Morris, M. Marquiss 26; E. Pratt 18.
M. Skyrme, P. Best, P. Barnikel, J. Dorling 15; V. Whiteford 27.
TENBY LADIES 33 SAUNDERSFOOT 51
It was in glorious sunshine that Tenby Ladies played Saundersfoot Ladies at Saundersfoot last Saturday.
Joan Dorling's rink had a titanic struggle against Thelma Mearns' rink, and at the end of the 17th end, Saundersfoot were holding a three-shot lead. However, on the 18th, the Tenby rink gained six shots and managed to stay in front to achieve a one-shot win, much to the relief of skip Joan.
Rink scores (Tenby first, Saundersfoot skips only):
M. Skyrme, P. Best, P. Barnikel, J. Dorling 21; T. Mearns 20.
L. Evans, M. Draper, M. Morris, M. Marquiss 12; M. Evans 31.
GOSCAR SUCCESS
On Tuesday of last week, Goscar had a fine win against St. Brides of Saundersfoot, winning on three rinks.
On Sunday, they met a strong team from Fishguard and Goodwick. They managed to win on three rinks, but lost the match on the fourth rink.
This, however, was a fine result for Goscar, getting six points. Well played lads.
PRIORY 51
FIVE ARCHES LADIES 44
The Five Arches ladies began their bid for the Pembrokeshire League title with a fixture against Priory at Haverfordwest last Wednesday evening.
The game did not go as well as captain Burney Russell and vice-captain Pat Stubbs had hoped, as the team suffered a seven-shot defeat.
But the squad did not come away empty-handed as the rink of Burney, Meryl Cooke, Rene Silcox and skip Vera Williams picked up two points by beating newly-installed Welsh indoor ladies president, Nora Evans, 30-24.
On the next rink, Anna Hubbard, Pat, Val James and Chris Morgan went down by 13 shots against Ann Thomas and her quartet.
Rink scores (Arches first, Priory skips only):
B. Russell, M. Cooke, R. Silcox, V. Williams 30; N. Evans 24.
A. Hubbard, P. Stubbs, V. James, C. Morgan 14; A. Thomas 27.
FIVE ARCHES LADIES 41
MILFORD HAVEN 29
Another solid win from Five Arches skip Vera Williams and her rink saw the team pick up four points from their match against Milford on Saturday afternoon.
Played in glorious sunshine at the Sutton Street green, Vera and her rink of Anna Hubbard, Meryl Cooke and Audrey Owens only allowed Milford to score on seven ends as the Arches cruised to a 25-8 win.
It was, however, more of a battle for skip Chris Morgan and her rink who fought hard with visiting skip Helen Lewis John and her players.
Pat Stubbs, Val James, Ceris Hewlings and Chris came from behind and drew level 14-all on the 16th end, but Milford finished strongest, scoring seven to the Arches two over the remaining ends to clinch a five-shot victory.
Rink scores (Arches first, Milford skips only):
A. Hubbard, M. Cooke, A. Owens, V. Williams 25; J. Navas 8.
P. Stubbs, V. James, C. Hewlings, C. Morgan 16; H. Lewis John 21.
