WHITLAND 14 pts.

BONYMAEN 8

Whitland completed their second double of the season on Saturday, winning a tense Swalec League Division One West match against Bonymaen by 14 points to eight.

Although Bonymaen are second from bottom of the table, this was not reflected in their performance as they pushed Whitland all the way in conditions that did not lend themselves to running rugby.

Unfortunately, heavy rain made the going difficult and and the ball like a bar of soap; indeed, it was a real leveller, but the Borderers were good for their win in the end.

Fullback Scott Newton for Whitland and outside-half Paul Warlow for the visitors slotted a penalty apiece, after both missing earlier ones, to send the teams in all-square at the break.

Early in the second half, after gathering loose ball, Bonymaen centre Richie Cunnliffe crossed for their only try, which Warlow failed to convert, to take them into the lead by eight points to three.

Whitland lost the services of Scott Newton with an injury, so outside-half Nico Setaro took over the kicking duties, with good results, and slotted two penalties after eight and 10 minutes to give his side the lead at nine points to eight.

The Whitland pack then started to take control up front and began to push the Bonymaen eight about in the scrums. This was seen after 26 minutes when the pack drove the visitors back over their own line and number eight and man-of-the-match Jack Mason got the touchdown, Setaro failed with the conversion attempt.

Bonymaen then threw everything at Whitland, but the defence was back to somewhere near its best and held firm, enabling the Borderers to close out the game.

Other than Jack Mason, flanker Andrew Hawkins had another good game, as did Setaro, and the team was well led by centre Gary Evans, with winger Dafydd Williams looking sharp again.
