Tonmawr 15 pts. Whitland 18 Whitland couldn't have had a better early Christmas present, taking league leaders' Tonmawr's 100 per cent record in National League Division One West after a total squad performance from 1 to 20. Outside-half Emyr Williams was the hero, scoring all of the Borderers' points. This was a disciplined and controlled performance by the Green and Whites, with the pack fronting up strongly and the backs not giving anything away in defence, and looking sharp in attack. It was not a day for total rugby, the ball being like a bar of soap after a heavy shower five minutes into the game, while a thawing pitch left the surface very slippery underfoot. Nevertheless, Whitland led 9-0 at the interval after three successful penalties from the boot of outside-half Emyr Williams, which they thoroughly deserved, after competing so well up front, not only in the set-piece, but also in the loose. Tonmawr cut the deficit three minutes into the second half with a penalty by outside-half Rob Evans, and got their first touchdown some four minutes later when centre Dave Tueti crossed for an unconverted try. Six minutes later, Emyr Williams extended Whitland's lead to four points with another well- taken penalty. Midway through the half, Tonmawr took the lead for the first time when left winger Ricky Price crossed for their second try which fullback Austin Howells converted. Again Whitland's never-say-die attitude came to the fore, and with the pack driving up the middle, Tonmawr's discipline again let them down, allowing Williams to bring the scores level with his fifth penalty of the afternoon. With some eight minutes remaining, Tonmawr's indiscipline cost them dearly, as first fullback Howells and two minutes later, flanker Dave Fitzgerald, were both yellow-carded, to leave the home side to play out the rest of the game with just 13 players. Whitland dominated this period, and hero of the day, Emyr Williams, dropped a goal with six minutes remaining, to give them the lead, which they thoroughly deserved after a totally professional and gutsy performance from the whole squad. As one loyal supporter said afterwards, "Whitland played like they believed in themselves." Well done lads! Team fielded: Matthew John, Dion Thomas, Lee Glanville, Gary Evans, Will Davies, Emyr Williams, Gareth Davies, Gareth Williams (Alun Davies), Mark Jones (Aled Harris), Richard Smith, Raff Williams, Carwyn Davies (Aled Evans), John Bowen, Phil Morgan (Ryan Michael), Randall Williams, capt. Sub not used - Johnny Morgan. Whitland Youth 30 pts. Tonmawr Youth 3 The young guns of Whitland eased through to the last eight of the Webb Ellis Welsh Youth Cup, on Saturday, as they totally blew away the opposition from Tonmawr. It was an awesome display of rugby, with Whitland totally dominating up front, which set the platform for some sparkling rugby from the backline. Playing against a very strong and swirling wind in the first half, Whitland kept the game tight and with their dominance up front and strong tackling behind, the scoreline stood at three-all at the break after outside-half Darren Davies, of Tonmawr, and home centre James Stephenson had traded penalties. The second half saw Whitland stamp their dominance on proceedings in no uncertain terms, as they ran in 27 points without reply, scoring five tries in the process. The first came after the forwards had taken the ball up, with second row Lewis Owen picking up and driving over down the blindside, while this was followed five minutes later when fellow lock Carl Smith touched down, again after good work by the Whitland eight The game was put out of reach of the visitors when hooker Gavin Walsh touched down for Whitland's third try, before the large crowd was treated to a moment of magic when fullback Daniel Newton picked up a loose kick on his own 10 metre line and took off on a tremendous run, beating four lines of defence, before giving the final pass to replacement winger Iestyn Scourfield, who scored with his first touch after coming onto the field. Whitland's total dominance was hammered home when flanker James Cub Davies touched down for his side's fifth try, which James Stephenson converted, to cap a total team performance. The young Borderers are wished good fortune in their next game in the Welsh Youth Cup competition. Whitland 37 pts. Dunvant 3 Whitland continued from where they had left off at Tonmawr, with a bonus point win at home against struggling Dunvant in a rearranged National League Division One West fixture on Sunday. Once again the pack set the platform in the first half, with a disciplined performance, while in the second half, the backs ran in four unanswered tries, to give plenty of cheer to the good crowd at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn. Outside-half and man-of-the-match Emyr Williams continued his good form with the boot, kicking three penalties in the opening period, with the only reply coming from fullback Mark Williams. Early in the second half, after a good break by scrum-half Gareth Davies, Williams was again in the thick of the action as he touched down for Whitland's first try, which he also converted. The lead was increased when fullback Matthew John scored under the posts, after right wing Dion Thomas had intercepted on halfway, with Williams again adding the two points. After good pressure by the forwards and some slick hands, winger Dion Thomas touched down for a third, again converted by Williams, and with Will Davies scoring a late try to give Whitland a bonus point, and Emyr Williams converting to take his points tally to 22, the Borderers could celebrate and now look forward to 2008 with good heart, after two excellent performances over the Christmas period.
