Whitland travelled to the capital to take on UWIC in Asda League Division One on Saturday and came away with the three points after completing a 29 -17 victory. Playing down the slope, and against a very strong wind, in the first half, Whitland outscored the home side by two tries to one to leave the interval score at 17-10 in their favour. Outside-half Aled Davies opened the scoring, with a penalty after four minutes, with his counterpart, Nicky Roberts, levelling the score with a similar kick after 12 minutes. Whitland scored their first try of the half through flanker Phil Morgan, who touched down after good driving work by the forwards, with Davies adding the extra two points. UWIC scored their opening try after 22 minutes, when flanker Steffan Taricska crossed, and with Roberts also adding the two points, it meant the score midway through the half was 10 points each. Whitland took the lead again just before the break. After a solid scrum some 10 metres out, captain and number eight Randall Williams picked up and drove to the line, where he slipped the ball to fellow back rower John Bowen, who was driven over by the rest of the pack to score the try. Davies again added the conversion. Early in the second half, the Borderers extended their lead with an unconverted try by second row Raff Williams. It came when, after good work by the backs, a ruck was formed, from which scrum-half Andrew Jenkins worked the blindside, before giving the try-scoring pass to Williams, who crossed in the corner. UWIC cut the deficit after 15 minutes, when winger George Dixon touched down, with Roberts adding the two points with the conversion. After 25 minutes of the half, however, the Borderers sealed the game when Aled Davies drilled a penalty from the halfway line, deep into the corner. From the resulting lineout, which was well taken by Carwyn Davies, the Whitland forwards drove to the line and replacement prop Gareth Williams was on hand to score their fourth and last try of the afternoon, which again fly-half Davies converted well. Whitland had to show their defensive qualities in the last 10 minutes after replacement flanker Ryan Michael and number eight Randall Williams were both yellow-carded by referee Phil Connett for infringements in the ruck, but stubborn resistance meant their line could not be breached by the students, and in the end they were worthy of their victory. This week sees Whitland play host to Llanharan, with a 2.30 pm kick-off. Team fielded: Lee Glanville, Dion Thomas, Gary Evans, Eifion Roberts, Jack Tremlett (Will Davies), Aled Davies, Andrew Jenkins, Alun Davies (Gareth Williams), Aled Harris (Jason Evans), Andrew Morillo, Raff Williams, Carwyn Davies (Graham Hartt), John Bowen, Phil Morgan (Ryan Michael), Randall Williams, capt.
Girls Rugby
Last Sunday, Whitland Girls under 14s and under 17s travelled to play Neath Girls. With the home side struggling to field full sides, the under 14s played seven-a-side and came out victorious after a very exciting game, by 21 points to 17. Whitland led at half-time by 14 points to seven following tries by Cherish Watts and Emily Hutton, with Cherish converting both of them. In the second half, Whitland's try scorer was Rebecca Norris, and again the touchdown was converted by Cherish Watts. Unfortunately, the under 17s did not fare so well, going down by 48 points to nil, in a ten-a-side match, to a very strong Neath side. Nevetheless, the Whitland girls showed great courage and are improving with every game, and will be a match for any side in the future.
