Llanharian 21 pts. Whitland 23
Talented young outside-half Nico Setaro helped Whitland bounce back from the disappointment of a home defeat against UWIC with 18 points in their narrow 23-21 success away at Llanharan on Saturday, which takes them joint top of Division One West of the Swales League.
The home side took the lead with a Chris Williams penalty, before Whitland scored their first try by centre Gary Evans. After a good platform was provided by the pack, Evans himself made a break, before feeding winger Dion Thomas, who ran down the line, before passing back inside for Evans to score, with Nico Setaro adding the extras.
Whitland's defence was then tested by the home side and came out on top, but they did concede a second penalty, which Williams kicked.
From the restart, Whitland took the ball and quick recycling saw fullback Lee Glanville go close, before the home side took the lead with Williams's third penalty, for the Dairymen to lead at the break by nine points to seven.
Early in the second half, after the forwards again set up good ball for the backs, centres Gary Evans and Mike Giorgiou combined well and put Nico Setaro in for Whitland's second try, which he also converted.
He then added two penalties to extend the Borderers' lead to 20 points to nine.
The home side hit back with an unconverted try by Steffan Thomas, before Setaro banged over his third penalty to once again give Whitland a nine-point cushion.
The home side scored again when, after some poor tackling, Steffan Thomas crossed for his second try and Chris Williams added the conversion to narrow the gap to 23 points to 21.
And as it turned out, that's how it finished, and the home side could have no arguments, as Whitland were well worth their win. The pack went well at the set-piece, Marc Jones, Raff Williams and Dylan Richards caught the eye and the backs were expertly controlled by Nico Setaro, with a great service from Andrew Jenkins. Centre Gary Evans tackled well and made numerous breaks, while winger Dion Thomas looked sharp.
Whitland fielded: Lee Glanville, Dion Thomas, Gary Evans (Jonathan Thomas), Mike Georgiou, Dafydd Williams, Nico Setaro, Andrew Jenkins (Huw Rees), Rhodri West (Gareth Lloyd), Marc Jones (Aled Harries), Richard Smith, Raff Williams (capt.), Rhys Jones, Dylan Richards, Celt Thomas, Ryan Michael (Andrew Hawkins).
