Whitland 28 pts. Llangennech 13

Whitland came from behind to win their home Swalec League Division One West clash against Llangennech by a comfortable 15-point margin.

With neither side setting the league on fire so far this season, this game, between two even sides, promised a lot and it certainly delivered, especially for the Borderers, as victory secured their third win of the season.

The home side may have finished strongly, yet the early exchanges belonged to the visitors. They took the lead via a Craig Evans penalty and soon after scored a try by Chris Mathias.

Whitland responded with a try by Dion Thomas after he latched on to a charge down by James Davies to dribble the ball over the line and, with scrum-half Huw Rees adding the conversion, the sides were level once more.

The score obviously gave the home team impetus as five minutes later, flanker James Davies scored a spectacular try from the halfway line which Rees converted, leaving the interval score 15-8 in the home side's favour.

A drop goal early in the second by Carwyn Jones increased Whitland's lead by three points, yet the early setback galvanised the visitors' into coming back into the game.

They imparted some serious pressure and were rewarded for their efforts with a pushover try by number eight Rhydian Jones.

Whitland responded with a penalty by Rees and five minutes later put the game beyond doubt when a fluent move along the backs produced a try for Will Davies after he came through on the burst. Rees added the extras, giving the final scoreline a look of respectability, even though the game was a bit closer than the final 15-point margin suggests.

In the second team fixture at Llangennech, the home side made amends for their first team losing as they defeated the Borderers' second string 14-7.

The home side scored two converted tries, while the visitors' points were scored by fullback Ross Michae,l who converted his own try.

Whitland stalwart supporter Rob Benjamin said it was a much improved performance by his team.

"We played well against a good side. It hasn't been the best start to the season, but the last few weeks have been good."
