A service provided for visually impaired people so that they can hear recorded versions of the Tenby Observer has been given a financial boost by the town council.

Councillors received a letter from the Tenby Talking Newspaper's honorary treasurer, Bob Storey, at their meeting on Tuesday night, and decided to donate to the service, which not only serves residents in the area, but has also seen CDs distributed as far as Dublin and Canada, where Tenby folk have moved to.

"Over the last 13 years, since the recordings commenced, I have realised just how greatly the recorded version of the Observer is appreciated by the recipients, with family and carers sitting down with the visually impaired person and listening to the CDs together," wrote Mr. Storey.

The scheme, which commenced in October 1999 on the initiative of chairman, Mrs. Eva Rich, sees the weekly preparation of CDs (changed from tapes some four years ago), duplication and distribution, undertaken by five volunteer teams, with 62 CDs currently produced each week.

Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, said that this was a very worthwhile cause in the community to donate to, with Clr. Trevor Hallett proposing a £100 donation, which was seconded by Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, and supported by their colleagues.
