Programmes for the Arts Festival (September 21-28) are available now in outlets throughout the town. This year, the scope of interest and entertainment ranges far and wide. There are talks on “The Ancient Silk Road”, “Dame Adelina Patti”, “The Fall of the Medieval World” and “Syria”, while for drama, we welcome back Alison Neil with her solo performance as the C11th polymath, Hildegard of Bingen.
The ever popular “Pint Sized Plays”, will be causing their usual hilarity around local pubs , and welcome your votes , prior to the finals later this year.
We are delighted to have Gillian Clarke, former Welsh National Poet, reading from her own work, and of course, there will be an opportunity to air your own work at our regular “Poetry Please”.
Local artist Graham Hadlow returns with his watercolour demonstration, while George Hancock entices us with his talk on “The Nude in Art”. For more artistic inspiration, why not follow the “Tenby Art Trail” listed in the back of the programme?
This year we have added two new venues to our line-up; Tenby Golf Club will host popular story-teller, Phil Okwedy, who, together with Mickey Price, makes a magical mix of music myths, folk tales and original songs.
The Harbwr Brewery hosts “Hot Strings Cafe”, (regulars at Cardiff’s “Cafe Jazz”) with 20’s & ‘30’s good time foot-tapping jazz, strongly influenced by Reinhardt and Grappelli. In the same venue, what more apt than Pete Brown (award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster) giving a talk on beer?
“Miracle Brew” takes us on a globe-trotting adventure through the nature of the much-loved drink, (sampling inc.!) covering cultural commentary, social history, personal discovery…...and more…….all delivered with warmth and wit. Refreshments are on offer at both of the new venues. .
Perhaps the festival’s greatest strength lies in its abundance of music. On Sunday, Whitland School Choir & Band rubs shoulders with the Trinity Singers (post-grads from Cardiff Opera School), while on Tuesday, pianist Alexander Ullman (Winner, 2016 Int. Franz Liszt Prize), gives a recital inc. works by Haydn, Beethoven, Liszt and Tchaikovsky.
Wednesday sees the exceptionally gifted classical cellist, Steffan Morris playing for us together with accompanying violinist, Ricky Gore and pianist, Conal Bembridge-Sayers.
In contrast to the classics, don’t miss our opening and closing nights. We start with a bang on Sat. 21 with the Robbie Williams and Adele Tribute Concert, and finish with the Goodwick Brass Band - both at the De Valence.
