Pembrokeshire beaches have retained the record number of 11 Blue Flags they won last year. This year's Blue Flag Awards - the most prestigious beach award in Europe - were announced by Carwyn Jones, Welsh Assembly Minister for Environment Planning and the Countryside, on Monday.

The county's award-winning beaches are: Amroth, Lydstep, Dale, Broad Haven, Newgale, Poppit Sands, Saundersfoot, Tenby Castle, Tenby North and Tenby South and Whitesands.

The Blue Flag announcement follow news that Pembrokeshire has more award-winning rural beaches than any other Welsh county, with 14 Green Coast Awards.

Only last month it was announced that Pembrokeshire had won more Seaside Awards than any other county in Wales.

Thirty-three beaches will be able to fly the distinctive yellow and blue Seaside Award flag and plaque, which shows they have attained at least the EU minimum legal standard of bathing water quality Said Clr. Rob Lewis, Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for tourism: "To have achieved 11 Blue Flags for the second consecutive year demonstrates that as far as beaches are concerned, Pembrokeshire is in the premiership.

"It is great news for Pembrokeshire and is recognition of all the hard work that we, and other agencies, have done to achieve this. "Our beaches help make Pembrokeshire one of the best places in Britain to spend a holiday."

This year, Wales has been awarded a record 43 Blue Flags for its beaches, plus four for its marinas. The prestigious European Award, which is run in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy, takes into account bathing water quality plus beach facilities such as public toilets and lifeguard provision.
