Tenby claimed a 'silver gilt' at the RHS Britain in Bloom 50th anniversary awards held in Bristol last week, with the town's Mayor, who spearheads the resort's campaign, recognised as 'a force to be reckoned with' by the competition's judges.
Tenby lost out to Hunstanton in Norfolk in the 'Coastal Up to 12k' category, but Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane, who is also chairman of the Tenby in Bloom committee, was given special recognition with an RHS 'community champion award', presented to individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment and dedication to the Britain in Bloom cause in their community, with judge Rae Beckwith on his second visit to Tenby commenting that on both occasions he was very impressed by the drive and commitment of Clr. Mrs. Lane.
"There can be little doubt who is the driving force in Tenby. During her years of involvement, all manner of worthy outcomes have been delivered, all making Tenby a better place in which to live," remarked Rae.
"Sue wears many hats, and this year she is Mayor again, a position of which she is justly proud.
"The combination of Bloom chair and Mayor makes her a force to be reckoned with!" he added.
Clr. Mrs. Lane said it was disappointing to miss out on the top prize for Tenby, but she was thrilled and honoured with the community champion award and that Tenby would be back next year to have another go.
"The feedback from the judges said that it was felt that there was not enough community input. Even though we're supported brilliantly, they want to see more people involved in the physical side of things," she explained.
"I can't thank people enough, though, for the work that's been done across the town, as, although small, we have a brilliant beautification team, and the recent work done at The Green, and the weeding across the town, is testament to that.
"I'd also like to thank the railway station team, all those who have given us fantastic financial support, and anyone who has helped in any way or volunteered.
"The work done gives an awful lot to the town and it's vital that we keep up appearances, especially with all the budget cut-backs that have been made, so we look forward to our challenge next year already and will come back stronger," added Clr. Mrs. Lane, who attended the awards ceremony in Bristol along with her Mayoress, Sian Waters.
This week, Clr. Mrs. Lane also launched a new initiative with a 'Friends of Tenby in Bloom' membership scheme.
"It's designed to give the chance to get people involved in the community who perhaps can't physically go out around the town and volunteer, but would like to support Tenby in Bloom," she explained.
Membership costs £20 and those joining up will receive a newly-designed Tenby in Bloom pin badge. Anyone interested can contact or call in at the Tenby Town Council offices at the De Valence in Upper Frog Street.
