Two local ambulance men had a lucky escape on Saturday morning when their ambulance crashed on the way to an incident in Templeton.

The £40,000 Mercedes ambulance went out of control on black ice between Begelly and Templeton, left the road and crashed down a 15-foot embankment into trees at around 12.15 am.

Paramedics Mike Tebbutt and John Rees, both based at Tenby Ambulance Station, were taken to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, by ambulance. They were both discharged from hospital on Saturday.

The ambulance, which was written-off following the accident, was on its way to Ramshorn Farm, Templeton, where firefighters from Narberth and Tenby were dealing with a fire at a scrapped caravan.

The controlled burning had damaged high voltage electrical wires, leading to power being cut off in the area.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said that the accident was under investigation, but the cause was due to "prevelant weather conditions."
