A beautiful autumnal morning and a large congregation had gathered at St. Mary's Church for the Service of Confirmation and Eucharist. The celebrant was Rt. Rev. Carl Cooper, Bishop of St. David's. The processional hymn was 'Ye that know the Lord is gracious.' The vicar, Rev. Michael John, warmly welcomed all to this special service. Mrs. Ann Sterlini read the first reading from the Book of Genesis relating the story of Jacob at Peniel. Mrs. Nicole Evans read the second reading from St. Paul's Letter to Timothy. Paul urges Timothy to proclaim the message, be persistent, convince and encourage. The gradual hymn and the third reading, read by Rev. Michael from the Gospel of Luke followed. Bishop Carl stated that it was a delight and pleasure to be in St. Mary's Church. "All those being baptised and confirmed today, may we surround you with fellowship and support," he said. "Back in the 70s I was a teenager and one of my favourite television programmes was The Price is Right. I always wanted to be Leslie Crowther. The aim of the game was that each contestant had to guess the price of a shown object and the closest to the price won the object. "We're going to play The Price is Right today. My first object is a book that received so much hype this summer, the final Harry Potter book. What is the price of this book?" After a few guesses, a guess of £14 was the closest. The Bishop went on to say "The second item is Hector, and he lives in my office and he dances and sings Frank Sinatra's 'New York, New York' - Start spreading the news.' How much is he worth?" The best guess was £25. The Bishop then asked for a volunteer and Lucy stepped forward. "How much is Lucy worth?" After guesses ranging from £4 to priceless, Bishop Carl said "I can put a price on Lucy, she is of infinite value to God, 'I will show how much you are worth to me, I will send my beloved son to live amongst you, to die a dreadful death on a cross for you'." Bishop Carl said: "I am a parent and I would never want to pay the life of my child for another human being. "Yes, God has surrounded all of us with His boundless, unilateral and unconditional love. "Worship means 'to give worth.' All those who say you don't have to worship to be a Christian are talking nonsense. It is awful Christian thinking and advice. Worship is not an optional extra, it's like turning round to God, and saying - you are not worth it. "To all present, realise anew and afresh our worth and value, as we respond to that overwhelming love, by worshipping and giving worth to God with all that we have and all that we are." The Bishop went on to baptise and confirm Julie Andrasko, Holly Edwards and Jeffrey Lewis. This was followed by the confirmation of the other confirmees - Eleanor Catt, Jemima Childs, Elise Cox, Lucy Gleed, David Llewellyn, Thomas Prestwich, Ella Rook and Peggy Williams. The offertory hymn was 'I the Lord of sea and sky.' The final hymn was 'Go forth for God, go forth to the world in peace'. Refreshments at Church House followed the service.
