A birthday bash on the sea for a Narberth man has seen a generous donation given to a life-saving charity service that takes to the skies. John Mathias celebrated his birthday on August 31 with family and friends from Narberth RFC by boarding The Pride of Tenby for a cruise which took in the sights of Caldey Island and Lydstep, with the money raised from the trip being donated to the Wales Air Ambulance charity. A magnificent £1,101.90 raised from the birthday celebrations was presented to local Wales Air Ambulance volunteers Jan Allison Jones and Marjorie Clarke at Tenby harbour last week. "Thanks to the generosity of the public, these donations go a long way to keeping the service running and helping save people's lives," said Jan. "The cost of running the service across Wales is £6 million per year, and each mission costs £1,500," she added. "It was a really fantastic, enjoyable evening, with lovely weather too," said John. "We are very grateful to everyone who joined in the celebrations, and also to Angus and Chris, the owners of The Pride of Tenby, for making the boat available," added John's wife Julie. Well-known Tenby resident Elwyn Bowen, who also celebrated a birthday recently, turning 101, made the trip, too, and was delighted to win a book signed by Welsh rugby captain Sam Warburton as part of the charity raffle.
