Someone who is certainly biking mad is Tony Carlyon. On Monday, Tony from Buckfastleigh will set off on a journey to fulfil three lifetime ambitions - to ride his much-loved Honda VFR800 motorbike around the coast of Britain, to see eagles, dolphins and otters in the wild, and to raise money for charity. And one of his stops on his epic journey will be Tenby. He will be journeying from Minehead in Somerset to Tenby on Wednesday and from Tenby to Borth, near Aberystwyth, the next day. Brian Kelly, of Whitewell Caravan Park, has kindly offered Tony a free camping pitch for the night. Sponsors of his 3,000 mile trip will be funding Brainwave, a charity based in Bridgwater, Somerset. It supports children with varying levels of disability whether caused by a brain injury at birth, like Cerebral Palsy, or a genetic condition like Down's Syndrome. There are seven families in Wales who are involved with the Brainwave programme and two on the waiting list and initial stages. Sixty-four-year-old Tony is already a volunteer locally back at home and has been encouraged in the project by his wife Maria who runs the Buckfastleigh Brainwave shop. "Ever since I've known him," she said. "He's always wanted to do a long bike trip. I'm thrilled he's going to raise money for Brainwave. I've no fears for him being on the road and I only wish I could go too." Tony's been inspired by his own children. "I have three children and seven grand-children," he said. "I feel very fortunate and I would like to give some of my time and energy to a charity which works so hard for children. Really, I think charities should be funded out of taxes, but they're not, so I am going to try and do my bit." Tony is bearing the costs of the three week trip - around £1,000 - but he's keeping costs down by carrying his own camping equipment. Tony added: "Someone asked me if I wasn't too old to be sleeping out in a tent. I said well, I'm going to be away from home, riding my bike, out on the road watching birds and wildlife - all in a good cause. When I come home I'm going to be as fit as a 50-year-old!"
