It is hoped Tenby will make a big splash next year when the town hosts the AGM for the Welsh Amateur Swimming Association.

Representatives of swimming clubs from all over Great Britain will attend this prestigious event - a particularly important occasion as 2004 is an Olympic year and sports and swimming will be receiving high profile media coverage.

On Tuesday night, the town council received a letter from secretary of the organising committee, Mrs. Stepanie Amos, asking for assistance.

"To promote Tenby nationally during this event, we would be most grateful if the council could arrange some form of display at the Fourcroft Hotel," she said.

"Traditionally, the host town of the AGM has kindly sponsored a buffet luncheon," she added, "and I am hoping that Tenby Town Council will do the same.

"Tenby and District Brass Band have also kindly offered their services for this day, as representatives of the town."

Clr. Mickey Folland suggested that they should approach Pembrokeshire County Council's marketing department to see if they could help.

"There might be some budget head, whereby they could provide a buffet," he said.

"They might do a display as well," agreed Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward.

The Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas, said that the local Dolphins swimming club were "very proud" to be hosting this event, but suggested she speak to Mrs. Amos first to find out exactly what they want.
