Sir,
Through your Letters page, please can I write to you as a deterrent to other senior citizens who may be caught out in a roofing scam.
Please be aware of unscrupulous people who are out and about again. I live in the Kilgetty area and was fleeced only last week by four men off the road, supposedly roof workers, who I put my trust in to do a roofing job, to get rid of the moss. Never again.
I am coming up to 80-years-old and had to go out and clean up the mess after they had left, with no receipt of payment given to me. I had a quote before the work was to begin with the price on, so they couldn’t up it at the end of the work. Only the moss was cleared off, with no doubt broken tiles?
They left all the filth round the back, the downpipe to the water butt was blocked up, and lo and behold, guttering was left full up with the moss rubbish. Also there was dust everywhere you looked, not hosed down.
Three times I rang the number on the advertising card that had been put through the door. The answer I received was that they would send the men out to clean up, but there was no appearance whatsoever all week, and no appearance from the so-called boss of the firm, who said he would come out to see for himself.
I reported all this to Dyfed Powys Police, but unfortunately they don’t seem to be able to do much, except give you a phone number to ring. I just put it down to my being too trusting, and bad luck for getting stitched up like a kipper.
I hope to have learned my lesson from this experience and hope no other vulnerable persons are caught out like I was.
Name and
address supplied.
