Trading standards officers in Pembrokeshire are alerting council tenants about door-to-door callers offering to help them buy their home. Householders in the Bufferland area of Pembroke Dock were visited earlier this week and asked whether they would like to buy their council house. They were told that loans and mortgages could be arranged for them. In one instance, the caller wrongly claimed that he worked for 'the council' without offering any identification. When considering taking out a loan or mortgage, trading standards advise that you should always take advice from a recognised professional, otherwise you could end up with serious financial problems. In the worse case even homes can be repossessed. "This is not the approach Pembrokeshire County Council's housing department would take" explained Rebecca Lewis, one of the authority's trading standards officers. "We would advise any council tenants who are approached in this way to be very wary and if they are suspicious to contact the council for further advice 01437 764551." Police in Pembroke Dock are investigating this matter.
