Councillors in Tenby hope that clearer signage will point motorists towards a car park rather than a cul-de-sac!
Correspondence from Pembrokeshire County Council’s senior traffic engineer, Ben Blake, came before members of the town council at their meeting on Tuesday after he received complaints from a resident of Southbeach Court in respect of motorists driving into the cul-de-sac which fronts the property, when they were driving along the Esplanade and looking for the car park.
“You may recall that I briefly touched on this some time ago and in an attempt to highlight the ‘no through road’ and direction to the car park at the Rectory, I provided an advance sign,” explained Mr. Blake, who admitted that the signage did not appear to have had had the desired effect.
“I am slightly wary that any additional signage that we provide is going to be visually intrusive, and as per the advance sign, probably ignored or missed,” continued Mr. Blake, who said that nevertheless, he had drawn up a sign design which could be erected in the region of the street light.
He also proposed that a directional arrow on the carriageway would serve as a reminder of the route for through traffic.
Responding to the proposals, the Mayor, Clr. Laurence Blackhall, said that he would encourage signage that directed motorists to car parks, however Clr. Mike Evans was wary that too much signage in that area would spoil the vista.
“It causes mayhem in the top corner of that area, an arrow in the road would be most welcome, but what it really needs is a sign telling you where the car park down the street is!” remarked Clr. Evans.
The town clerk suggested meeting with the PCC representatives on site to discuss the proposals.
