The current Point to Point steeplechasing season came to an end in West Wales last weekend on a splendid afternoon at Trecoed, near Fishguard. Competition for championship places is particularly keen amongst the jockeys at this critical stage and it was pleasing to see Oliver Greenhall - well out in front for this year's national title - coming down to ride two winners at the Pembrokeshire Hunt event and, seemingly, to show the locals just how it is done. The leading Welsh jockey, Rhys Hughes, also had two winners and several of the local youngsters distinguished themselves very well. There were very strong entries for all bar the opening Members race, with several close finishes on a course which, despite having been well watered, was still rated as firm. Apart from in the Hunt Members race, the only successful local winners were Paul Evans with the eight-year-old bay gelding, Danbury, under Marc Barber in the Men's Open, and Steven and Lucy Jones - with Lucy in the saddle - on their eight- year-old chestnut mare, Fruitful Citizen, in the Ladies'. The day itself favoured the punters with particularly good odds achievable in the Men's Open and in the Intermediate races. In what is generally considered to have been one of the best point to point seasons for very many years, the organisers report an exceptionally good gate and the majority of the visitors together with owners, trainers and jockeys all went home happy following a truly lovely day out.
