Pembrokeshire Autograss Club (PAC) held their annual dinner and presentation night at the Cleddau Bridge Hotel, Pembroke Dock, on Saturday, with over 100 members and guests attending.
Following the four-course gala dinner, Tony Rees, chairman, thanked the landlords of the PAC racetrack, David and Johnathon Harries, of Hayes Farm, Hodgeston, along with his fellow officials and club members for the 2010 season.
The 2010 racing season had been the best ever for the PAC club, who proudly have the men's class four national champion and the men's overall national champion of champions in Rob Corbett, PAC3. He is now known as 'Mr. Autograss' because his racing car and driving skills are always on top form. Rob also completed the season of as runner-up in the British Autograss Series.
In the men's nationals, Tom Roberts, aged 17, from Pembroke Dock, also had a fantastic weekend and in his first year of juniors came home runner-up in the very competitive class one final - a fantastic achievement for the youngster in his PAC157 Mini.
Dalton Thomas, another youngster, aged 19, made the national class 2 final and was in second place, but had to retire with a mechanical problem.
Not to be upstaged the PAC men, the PAC ladies and juniors did exceptionally well at the national championships.
Michaela Bevans raced the excellent class eight special of Luke Jenkins, PAC18, and, with only one race meeting under her belt prior to the ladies' nationals, drove the car superbly all weekend and achieved two firsts and a third in her qualifying heats and entered the final with top points.
The final had all the top class eight racers from the country and it was close going into the first corner, with Michaela coming out in first position; from then on she did not look back and finished half-a-lap ahead of the second-placed car.
A great achievement and thanks must be extended to Luke and his dad for preparing the car, as well as Wayne Llewellyn, of WL Racefab, Johnston, Haverfordwest.
To finish off the weekend, Michaela could not take the double with class seven. She again entered this final in top place, but after the first corner was back in last place (8th). As the eight long laps passed, however, she drove beyond belief and finished fourth, with the top four places only two cars apart.
Paula Rees-Williams, PAC57, from Burton, drove in class six in the excellent car of her brother and had to have four re-runs due to stoppages and incidents on the track, when on each occasion she had been leading.
Her driving was excellent all weekend and coming home in first place in the national ladies class six final was the icing on the cake after finishing runner-up last year.
Paula also raced in class two, PAC51, and made the final in third place. Again there were numerous stoppages and she was always in the top four places, but on the final attempt had to be content with a battered fifth place.
Bobbie Neale, PAC81, was the unluckiest lady at the nationals because, after achieving two firsts and a second place in her qualifying heats, the national autograss body decided to run two semi-finals and Bobbie was very unfortunate not to qualify.
Alice Bevans, PAC2, raced in the junior nationals and, out of over 90 competitors, made the top 32 for the four quarter-finals, which she stormed away to win and into the semi-finals. Alice was the only girl to achieve this, but on gaining second place had to retire from the race.
Alice also finished in sixth place in the British and was top girl.
It is 19 years since the PAC club has had the men's national champion of the champions and three national champions.
Not to be outdone by his sister, Nathan Rees claimed the British class six title and had to fight tooth and nail until the final round down in Kent, but with his cool head and exceptional driving, took the title in fine style.
Will Elford finished in sixth place in the British, as well as Bobbie Neale, who shares the PAC81 car.
Michaela Bevans secured her fourth British class seven title on the trot in the super saloon class.
Following the presentation of cups and trophies, the night was greatly enjoyed by everyone, with laughing and dancing to an excellent comedian and supporting disco.
PAC's first race meeting of the 2011 season is on March 26 at Lamphey, starting at 11 am, with the highlight of the season being round one of the British Autograss Series, which the PAC club are hosting on April 30 and May 1 ,starting at 9 am.
