Pembrokeshire's sporting team has a new manager.

Ben Field has taken over the helm of Sport Pembrokeshire - the county council's sports development arm.

The 32-year-old from Haverfordwest was previously an all-round sports development officer with the 17-strong team.

He takes over from John Deason, who retired in January.

"I want to build on the good work already done by John and the team to improve the sporting opportunities for children and young people in our county," said Ben.

"Sport is essential for health and wellbeing as well as providing vital life lessons. It's therefore important to improve sporting participation in youngsters and encourage them to get involved.

"We want to build capacity in the voluntary sector, enhance PE provision in schools and develop more extra curricula clubs."

Ben, who has two young daughters Chloe and Tilly, attended Tasker Milward School before gaining a BSc at Cheltenham and Gloucester College of High Education. He also holds a PGCE teacher training certificate from the University of Gloucestershire.

Before joining the sports development team as a cricket development and 5x60 officer, he worked as a teacher at a comprehensive school in Stroud.

Like all members of the team, Ben is a keen sportsman himself and plays senior cricket for Haverfordwest.

He has also played football for Merlins Bridge and in his youth won a bronze medal for the pole vault in the Welsh Athletic Championships.
