Tenby town council are looking to continue their work with bringing beach wheelchairs to the resort after successfully introducing the facilities last summer.

‘Beach friendly’ wheelchairs were introduced to the resort’s Castle and North beaches last July, aiding users with access to Tenby’s sands and even the sea.

Members of Tenby town council worked with Pembrokeshire County Council access officer Alan Hunt, and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority (PCNPA) to make arrangements for the wheelchairs to be available in the seaside town, and are carrying on with the project (partially in memory of the late Mr. Hunt) this year, by looking to install wheelchair accessible picnic tables around the harbour.

“Before Alan sadly passed away we were working on getting a specially adapted wheelchair for children, and are making a funding bid to the Enhancing Pembrokeshire Fund.” said the town clerk Andrew Davies.

With a bid for the funding imminent, Mr. Davies told members of the town council at their meeting on Tuesday night that he had been in contact with Hannah Buck from Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority’s ‘Beach Wheelchairs for Children and Young People’ initiative.

“PCNPA have had beach wheelchairs on Pembrokeshire’s beaches for nearly 10 years making it possible for many more people to enjoy a visit to the beach,” she said in correspondence to the town council.

“We are now developing our beach wheelchair offer so that more children and young people can get onto the beach.

“With funding from Welsh Government we plan to build a fleet of beach wheelchairs more suited to children and young people.

“In terms of getting of specially adapted wheelchair for children, I am currently looking in to the feasibility of developing a loan scheme for beach wheelchairs that would be specifically suitable for children and young people,” she added.
