Sir,

I have read with some dismay about the council's proposed action against the street traders who operate near the Five Arches in the summer.

There is a face painter, highly popular with the children who come on holiday, an artist who produces good pencil drawings, again a popular feature, and small trinkets can be purchased there.

The people who carry out this very small business are quiet and well behaved, and they leave no rubbish around when they finish for the day.

In no way do they impinge on local business, as they do not sell cars, clothes, houses, food, or anything to affect local trade.

Street traders have been a part of town and city life for hundreds of years, and I would urge the council to be tolerant towards them and try to take action in respect of the South Beach, which is disappearing rapidly, and that will take thousands of visitors with it.

Major F. J. Thomas,

Jameston.
