It needed a battling performance by Narberth Youth to overcome a plucky Pembroke Dock side for their fourth consecutive win in the Pembrokeshire league on Saturday. From the start, both sides showed a huge commitment with the young Quins clearly keen to notch up their first win of the season. After an equally matched opening, Narberth began to get territorial advantage and, with some good off loading out of the tackle, took play to the Quins 22. The first try of the game then seemed certain when burly prop Gareth Jones peeled away from a maul for a 15-metre run to the line only to see the ball knocked out of his hands as he went to touch down. Shortly afterwards, the young Otters deservedly put the first points on the board when full-back Gethin Salter entered the line on half-way to race through opposition tackles for a trademark try. Narberth continued to play most of the rugby in their opponents half with half-backs Tom Parsells and Sam Macnaghton moving the slippery ball at every opportunity and Richard Sharpe-Williams making powerful runs in the centre. Dan Jenkins showed his pace and tackling ability on the left wing, while Chris Absalom on the left wing displayed some promising touches in his first run out for the club. Up front, Paul Brown at hooker, well supported by Daniel Adams at prop, was once again in the thick of the action and Aled John bounced back well from a good raking to put in a solid performance alongside Ben Jenkins in the second row. At number eight, Jordan Aspinall picked and carried the ball powerfully from the base of the scrum and, shortly before half-time, was rewarded with a try when he bulldozed his way over from 10 metres out. The Quins came out even more determined for the second half and, even though they were now playing against the slope and the wind, managed to keep Narberth on the defensive for much of the time. The visitors had to battle hard in muddy conditions, but kept a clean sheet thanks to some excellent tackling, particularly from the all-action flankers Rion Whatmore and Johnny Manns and centre Dan Davies. Despite the difficult conditions, this was an entertaining game that was helped by a good refereeing display by M. Brinckle.
