Schools competing at the recent West Wales Schools Under 16 Basketball Championships held at Tenby Leisure Centre were Greenhill (Under 14 Welsh champions two years ago), Tasker Millward, Milford, Queen Elizabeth Maridunum and Amman Valley.
Greenhill's first game was against Amman Valley. The Tenby team stormed into the lead and the half-time score was 16-1 in Greenhill's favour. The whole of Greenhill's squad was used throughout the game and they ran out winners by 24-12.
Scorers: Tom Page 2 pts; Steven Ive 2; Jason Llama 12; Rhys Bromby 2; Ben Charles 6.
Greenhill met Milford in their second game and after a slow start when the scores were two points each, the Tenby team gradually eased in front and ended the half 12-3 ahead. Tenby relaxed in the second-half and extended their lead to end up winners by 22-5.
Scorers: Jason Keight 4; Tom Page 2; Ben Charles 6; Jason Llama 6; David Ayers 2; Steven Ive 2.
Their third game saw them come up against Queen Elizabeth Maridunum. This was a small team and was Greenhill's easiest match.
Greenhill led 14-1 at half-time and furthered this in the second-half to win 24-2.
Scorers: Steven Ive 6; Tom Page 4; Jason Llama 10; Jason Keight 2; David Ayers 2.
Their last match brought them up against Tasker Millward, who had also won their previous three matches. After a nervous start, Greenhill opened the scoring with a basket from big man Steve Ive. The match swayed to and fro, with both defences outstanding.
Greenhill gradually went further ahead with another basket by Steven Ive and two free throws by Ben Charles, to bring the half-time score to 6-0.
Tenby stretched their lead in the second-half and when Jason Keight scored a basket, this brought the final score to 15-0.
This was a superb performance by the Greenhill squad, and especially their defence, to prevent Taskers from scoring.
Overall, Greenhill scored a total of 85 points in four games, while only conceding 19 points. Top scorer was Jason Llama with 32 points.
This was an excellent overall performance, which now takes the Greenhill team forward as West Wales champions into the Welsh Schools knockout stages.
