Sir, Re. the Barbecue building (old mining office) in Saundersfoot. I attended a public meeting where the county council representative enlightened us that the building is to be sold. Saundersfoot County Council would have liked to have taken over the building and turned it into a museum (of our past). However, they were informed it would cost several hundred thousand to bring it up to county council standards (the county council have let the building deteriorate). No way can Saundersfoot Community Council find such a sum (as the county council know). If a developer purchases the site, he will knock it down, erasing the memory of all those - men, women and children - who over many years gave their sweat, blood and sometimes their lives, working in awful conditions for a pittance (no NHS, pensions or security). This memory of those people stands proud in our lives. The old mining office reminds us and tells the visitors of the debt we owe to those people. Without their sacrifices, there would be no Saundersfoot. The cenotaph reminds us of those who gave their lives in wars. The old mining office is our cenotaph to those who gave their lives in peace. So we can keep the candle of their sacrifices alight forever, I ask the county council to put money in second place and leave a permanent reminder, so the people of Saundersfoot can stand proud and say to visitors: 'They were our ancestors! They are Saundersfoot! God bless them.'

Mr. A. R. Williams,
