Members of Pembrokeshire County Council's economy overview and scrutiny committee will meet next week to discuss the calling in of a decision regarding the future of Saundersfoot's Barbecue building. As reported by the Observer last week, the cabinet granted the community council a 12-month option to lease the former coal mining office in Cambrian Place for community use. Providing a viable business plan is produced before the expiration of this period, the community council will be granted a 99-year full repairing and insuring lease at a peppercorn rent and make available the ground floor free of charge for the Tourist Information Centre. However, the use of the premises will be limited to community use and sub-letting or assignments will be barred, a clause which has led to Clr. Mrs. Rosemary Hayes submitting documents for the decision to be called in. The reason given is that the community council only need to let one room to have an income for the upkeep of the building. Community councillors hope to have a heritage display around the former restaurant and the middle of the room to sublet for a coffee/souvenir shop. Now an idea has been put forward that a ceiling be placed on the rent which would safeguard worries that a large business would be allowed to take over the building. The matter will be discussed at Monday's meeting.
