Shalom House Fund-raising Groups throughout Pembrokeshire will be flying the flag at future events. Thanks to Murco Oil, Milford Haven Refinery, they have received banners bearing the words Shalom House Palliative Care Unit. The groups - located in St. Davids, Fishguard, Newport, Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, St. Ishmaels, Lawrenny and Manorbier - have raised thousands of pounds for Shalom House, St. David's. The unit opened its doors to patients last November. It provides short-term palliative care for people with life-threatening illnesses and is the first such facility in Pembrokeshire. The banners were presented by Maria Martin, Murco's human resources assistant. Said chairman of the Shalom fund-raisers committee, Gwynne Griffiths; "Fund-raising is crucial to Shalom. It was fund-raising that brought about the establishment of this unit after the donation of the bungalow at St. David's by author Elizabeth de Guise." He added that the hard work of these groups in organising fund-raising events did not go unrecognised. He thanked the sponsorship committee of Murco Oil for funding the manufacture of the banners which will be displayed by groups at future events.

Pictured at Shalom House with one of the new banners are (from left): St. David’s fund-raiser Kath Mathias; Renate Thome, Shalom’s director of services; Gwynne Griffiths, chairman of the Shalom fund-raisers committee; Maria Martin, Murco’s human resources assistant; Margaret Burnett, founder of Shalom House, and Caroline Lloyd, treasurer of the Shalom fund-raisers committee.
