Builth Wells 12 pts. Whitland 12

Whitland's visit to Builth Wells was not a happy one as the game ended in a 12-all draw - well deserved by the home side and a point gained in their fight to stay in Division One West, but hugely disappointing for the league leaders and another two points dropped in their quest for promotion.

Whitland won enough ball to have gained a bonus point win, but all that was good the week before against Llandovery was very poor on Saturday, and particularly so as they played against 14 men for most of the game and 13 for the last 10 minutes.

Despite this, the Borderers could not take advantage, but Builth deserve praise for their total commitment and never-say-die attitude.

Winger John Thurston gave the Bulls the lead with a penalty after five minutes, with Whitland levelling just three minutes later when fullback James Stephenson kicked his first penalty.

Then, after 13 minutes, Builth's Chris Davies was red-carded for going in with the knee on Whitland hooker Trystan Griffiths, who had to leave the field, being replaced by Marc Jones.

The Bulls regained the lead with another Thurston penalty after 25 minutes and, with Stephenson failing with his second attempt on half-time, the score remained six points to three to the home side at the break.

Early in the second half, after a great steal by number eight Randall Williams at the lineout, the Builth backs were caught offside and Stephenson levelled the scores with his second penalty, only for Thurston to gain it back for the Bulls with his third effort some four minutes later.

When Stephenson was replaced, outside-half Aled Davies took over the kicking duties and banged over two penalties in the 11th and 24th minutes of the half to give the Borderers the lead for the first time by 12 points to nine.

With 10 minutes remaining, flanker Ben Pugh back-chatted referee Greg Morgan and was yellow-carded, but the resulting penalty, which would have eased Whitland further in front, was unfortunately put wide by Davies.

Indeed, after that, it was Thurston who levelled for the home side with his fourth penalty after 37 minutes, to gain a vital point for the Bulls and crush Whitland's hopes of what in truth would have been an undeserved win.

Whitland fielded: James Stephenson (Gary Evans), Dion Thomas, Lee Glanville, capt, Aled Jones, Jonny Morgan, Aled Davies, Huw Rees, Craig Kelly (Richard Smith), Trystan Griffiths (Marc Jones), Andrew Jones, Raff Williams, Carwyn Davies (Luke Kendall), Dylan Richards, Jack Mason (Ryan Michael), Randall Williams.

Whitland 2nds 36 pts. Llangennech 2nds 7

Whitland Seconds played their first game for nearly two months when Llangennech were the visitors to Parc Dr Owen last Saturday and ran out comfortable winners by 36 points to seven, to keep the pressure on Llandovery 2nds at the top of the Carmarthen Tyre Services League.

Whitland led at the break by points 12 to nil following tries by centre Wayne Morris and flanker Celt Thomas, with fullback Darren Rees converting one of them.

In the second half, Whitland totally dominated, running in a further four tries by centre Mathew Howells, winger Will Davies, second row Mathew Greenish and replacement fullback Carwyn Jones, who also converted two.

Llangennech did score late on with a try by prop Gareth Rees, which was converted by outside-half Andrew Howells.

Beddau Youth 6 pts. Whitland Youth 3

Whitland's dream of a return visit to the Millennium Stadium for the final of the Webb Ellis Welsh Youth Cup was ended on Sunday when they went down six points to three away at Beddau.

It proved a tough encounter, which wasn't helped by the referee continually blowing his whistle and not letting the game flow for both sides.

In the end, it came down to little more than a 'penalty shoot-out' which the home side won, although Whitland did have their chances - albeit from long range - to level the score. If they had, it would have meant them going through as the away side, but it was not to be.

Beddau took the lead after four minutes when outside-half Mitchell Jenkins kicked a penalty, only for Whitland's captain, winger Scott Newton, to level after six minutes.

Jenkins missed with his next attempt, before giving the home side the lead with a second success after 22 minutes.

Scott Newton failed to bring the scores level after 24 minutes and the half came to end with the home side in the lead by six points to three.

The second half was much a mirror image of the first, with three failed penalty attempts, one by Scott Newton and two by fullback James Stephenson - the last from the halfway line just falling short.

Therefore, it was the home side who took their place in the draw for the quarter-finals, but the young Borderers can hold their heads high for the total effort that they put into the game.

Whitland Ladies 10 pts. Dolgellau Ladies 27

Whitland Ladies welcomed Dolgellau to Parc Dr Owen in a National League division two match on Sunday.

Having lost to the North Wales side earlier in the season by 79 points, Whitland put in a much improved performance this time, before eventually losing by 27 points to 10.

Tries for the home side came from number eight Chloe Howells and scrum-half Rosie Hutton, and for the visitors from Nia Lloyd, Natalie Jones, Elen Evans and Jess Kavanagh (2), who also converted one.
