In response to Gerald Rogers’s postcards showing the Town Walls and in particular the Five Arches, Ruth Griffiths, of Lamphey, has sent some from her own collection featuring the iconic South West gate of Tenby. She adds: “I love the one which shows what might have been a cycling club. I wonder if anyone knows anything about it. The first one here appeared in the Tenby Times, but Ruth has added a little detail concerning the pony trap in the picture.
According to the late Ivor John, of Lower Frog Street, it belonged to a lady from Begelly who used to bring butter to Tenby market every week. She then took her butter money to the Bush Inn. When she was so drunk she couldn’t stand, the landlord used to carry her round, put her in the trap, tell the pony to “walk on” and the unconscious lady would be taken safely home.
The message on this card reads: “Dear Annie, Just a P.C. to let you know that the butter is ready, so that some of you can come and fetch it. We are having lovely weather now since Hillie went back. I hope you are all quite well… Jenny” Brecon, July 3, 1907.
