PEMBROKESHIRE Under Fire, one of the most successful books ever published in the county, is back in print by popular demand.

Written by well remembered journalist Bill Richards, Pembrokeshire Under Fire tells the story of the devastating air raids on the county in World War II.

First published in 1965 - following a series of post-war articles in the West Wales Guardian - Pembrokeshire Under Fire was subsequently reprinted twice. A new edition, published by Paterchurch Publications, of Pembroke Dock, appeared in 1995 and this has now been reprinted.

John Evans, of Paterchurch Publications, said there was a steady demand for the book.

"Bill Richards provides a remarkable first-hand account of this most trying period in the county's history when Pembrokeshire found itself in the front line and under great threat from the air. Pembroke Dock town was very badly bombed in 1941, but many other communities, including Tenby, were hit as well.

"The book is now a textbook for GCSE history students studying World War II and there has been constant demand over the years."

Bill Richards, who died in January 2003, wrote nine books and made a major contribution to his native county by recording local history.
