RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Programme) in Pembrokeshire is celebrating as three of its volunteers, John and Denise Hulme and Sandra Myatt, have recently received awards for their invaluable contributions to local projects. John and Denise, who are responsible for organising Cars for Carers on behalf of RSVP, were chosen from volunteers nominated across Wales. In recognition of their dedication and hard-work, they were presented with a 'Highly Commended' Award from WCVA (the Wales Council for Voluntary Action) at a recent award ceremony in Haverfordwest. Cars for Carers is a transport scheme for unpaid carers provided by a team of dedicated volunteer drivers. John and Denise give unstintingly of their time and are often the first point of contact for carers in difficult circumstances. RSVP project worker Rachel Evans said: "Not only are John and Denise there four days a week taking calls and organising journeys, they are trusted helpers and confidants and their compassionate approach and cheery nature has ensured that Cars for Carers has become a circle of friends as well as a valued service." Sandra Myatt was presented with the 'Volunteer of the Year Award' for the over 50-age group by Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services. Sandra has built up a circle of nearly 100 RSVP knitters across Pembrokeshire. Some work on their own at home and others in small groups, producing clothes, toys and blankets for deserving causes both here and abroad. Without Sandra, none of this would happen. She organises the collection and distribution of wool, as well as finished articles, and then packs up enormous parcels many of which are sent off on convoys to Romania. A visit to Sandra's house shows just how much this project has taken over her life and nothing is too much trouble for her. Many of her knitters find it difficult to get out and yet through this project and regular contact from Sandra, they are able to feel involved and that they are making a valuable contribution to the community. RSVP are always glad to welcome new volunteers or perhaps you are a carer in need of transport. If you would like any more information please call 01437 768195 or 07901 551407. Either the project worker Lynda Hill or one of the team of volunteer organisers will be happy to talk to you in more detail.
