TWO Pembrokeshire butchers, Preseli Gold Sausage Company and the Yerbeston Gate Farm Shop, won awards in the recent South Wales Counties Awards for Excellence In Meat Products. A record 310 product entries were submitted from independent butchers in this years' annual South Wales heat of Hybu Cig Cymru/Meat Promotion Wales annual awards for butchers held in Swansea. Innovation and quality were the key words for the competition which also focused on more traditional products. Husband and wife Peter and Beverly Hughes, of Preseli Gold Sausage Company, from Fishguard, swept the board in the sausage category. Out of six evaluation classes entered, they picked up six golds, enabling them to win the Supreme Sausage Championship. Their pork and cracked black pepper sausage, which scored 100 marks out of 100 from the judges, also won a supreme championship award. One of their winning six entries was the sausage created especially for Pembrokeshire County Council's catering department and which is served in all the schools in the county. This win means the couple can now enter the grand final to be held at the Royal Welsh Show in July. Mr. Hughes also qualifies for the Champion of Champion Butcher's Awards in London. Following their latest triumph, Preseli Gold has already won a total of 14 golds in various competitions in 2005. Entering the competition for the first time, Andy Eastwood, of the Yerbeston Gate Farm Shop, was delighted to win three golds in the evaluation classes for his beefburger and lamb and mint burgers. He also picked up three silvers and one bronze for his speciality sausages.
