An award-winning team at Withybush Hospital has been celebrating a year of success for World Radiography Day. The radiology department has enjoyed a number of successes this year, culminating in the opening of Pembrokeshire's new state-of-the-art MRI scanner suite opened by the Minister for Health and Social Services Edwina Hart recently. Last year, team members were also named as the 'Best Radiography Team of the Year' in Wales by the UK Society of Radiographers, an accolade recognising the outstanding contribution of radiographers in service improvements and patient-led care. Said the Medical Director for Acute and Community Services at Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust, Dr. Charles Merrill: "As a Trust, we are very proud of the huge strides forward that have been made in the radiology department at Withybush Hospital over the last 12 months. This success has been achieved thanks to the dedication and commitment of the staff who work closely to deliver and improve services locally. We are extremely proud of the whole team and congratulate them on their success." The objective of World Radiography Day is to raise awareness of the vital work that radiographers perform and its potential as a worthwhile and rewarding career. The new 1.5 Telsa MRI scanner, which opened in August following £1.5m funding from Welsh Assembly Government, provides much more advanced diagnostic services to Pembrokeshire patients plus a local service which eliminates the need to travel outside of the county. It is part of a phased £39m Service Improvement Plan for Withybush Hospital which includes a new £8.75m A&E department, far more single en-suite rooms, two new theatres, a renal dialysis unit, paediatric and chemotherapy day units and improved rehabilitation services.
