THEY say life begins at 40, but for one ex-Pembrokeshire woman it begins at 50. Avril James, whose mother Doris lives in Carew, is doing an abseil in aid of the RNIB.

Before moving to Worcester, Avril worked at T. P. Hughes as children's wear buyer and later at Somerfield attached to the security department.

The abseil is down the Giffard Hotel in Worcester. And this is the second time Avril has abseiled down this building in aid of the blind.

Avril's grandfather Evan (Ianto) Perkins was blind in his later years, so Avril is being joined once again by friends and work colleagues to support this worthy cause.

Since doing the first abseil, she has been involved with charity work in aid of the blind, and is events organiser for the Worcester Local Appeal Group organising quiz nights, race meetings and raffles.

If anyone who knows Avril would like to sponsor her, two of her ex-colleagues at T. P. Hughes, Carol Lloyd and Ray Hine, who both work in the menswear department, have sponsor forms, or donations can be sent to the following address with cheques payable to 'RNIB Charity', 11 Rectory Gardens, Henwick Road, Worcester, WR2 5NH.

Avril has also been given a signed photograph from Charles Dale to raffle for this worthy cause.

The region covers Wales, the South and the Midlands.

Avril receives the Tenby Observer every week from her mother Doris. Avril says she reads it from cover to cover and then passes it on to her childhood neighbour and friend Sylvia Fox (nee Walters), who resides in Cheltenham, and in turn Sylvia passes it to her brother George, who resides in Birmingham.

This Observer travels the countryside!

Avril says that due to the foot and mouth outbreak, business in Tenby has been hit badly, so if any business people are prepared to sponsor her for £10 or more, she will wear a t-shirt on the day advertising companies who have sponsored her.

Not a bad way to put Tenby back on the map and also to help this worthy cause.
