September's meeting of the Pembrokeshire Aviation Group, held as usual at Withybush Airport on the second Tuesday of the month, heard from founder member John Evans of the crash 60 years ago of Liberator EV881 of 547 Squadron, RAF, on Carn Bica in the Preseli Hills. Six of the nine-man crew lost their lives as a result of the accident. The crew was en route to carry out an exercise with a Royal Navy submarine off North Wales and as they cut across Pembrokeshire they failed to clear Carn Bica by about 20-feet. Over the years, John and other members of the group have made contact with the survivors and families of the crew and three relatives of the pilot, Stanley Kearey, were among those present at the meeting. Nearly 20 years ago, the group erected a cairn on the site - on which nothing has grown since - and on the actual 60th anniversary, Sunday, September 19, a party of members climbed to the memorial. They were joined by Stan Kearey's relatives and three members of the family of the flight engineer, Raymond Sellors, and by residents from the local area. A short service was held and poppies and flowers were laid. The sound of the Last Post and Reveille sounding out over the bleak, windswept mountain was a most moving experience.
