The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority's work in promoting the principles of sustainability was recognised last week when it was presented with a top environmental award. The award was part of the eighth annual Wales Environment Awards, run by Arena Network to raise the profile of sustainability and to celebrate best practice in sustainable development among Welsh businesses and organisations. The Management Award for Sustainability in the Public Sector was presented to the National Park Authority by a representative of the Wales Environment Trust at an award ceremony in Cardiff. Receiving the award was the authority's sustainable development officer, David Fletcher. "This is a significant achievement for the organisation and hopefully demonstrates our commitment to adopting a sustainable approach in all of our working practices," he said. "As well as developing a 'green' office environment through the use of a biomass boiler, solar thermal panels and a rainwater harvesting system, sustainability audits of all departments have been conducted, and the first steps have been taken to developing a sustainable procurement strategy, encouraging suppliers to attain environmental accreditation." The authority was shortlisted alongside Coleg Llandrillo, Colwyn Bay and the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Barry. Speaking of the achievement, chief executive of the National Park Authority, Nic Wheeler, said: "This award is wonderful recognition of the authority's work in developing and delivering its sustainable development agenda. We have worked hard as an organisation to embed the principles of sustainability in all that we do, and will continue to ensure that our role in looking after our environment is taken seriously." As part of its commitment to the environment, the Park Authority was presented with level 2 of the Green Dragon environmental award earlier this year.
