Narberth 42 pts. Waunarlwydd 21
The Otters continued their winning run with another bonus points win, to make it three on the trot, as they set out to play the return leg in the extremely competitive programme of Division One West league fixtures to start the second half of their league campaign in just the right way.
In doing so, they reversed the fortunes of the first league fixture at the start of the season when at Waunarlwydd they were given a lesson by Waun in how to play and finish off attacking rugby at its best, by going down 29-18.
Narberth grasped the initiative from the kick-off to produce some sizzling attacking movements and, apart from the five minutes interlude of poor concentration just before half-time, the creation of chances was not at the expense of their defensive duties either.
Centre and captain Steve Martin bagged the first try after four minutes. It followed a break up the left touchline by centre Richard Davies, who grubber kicked the ball for Martin to run on to, before completing the move in an accomplished manner.
Outside-half Nick Jones converted and kicked a penalty 12 minutes later to increase the lead.
Winger Tom Bonnell demonstrated his superb finishing skills, when he evaded a number of defenders before he cut inside to touch down for a try near the posts.
Nick Jones had the satisfaction of adding the points for the conversion after starting the move which led to the try with an exciting break.
Waun were reduced to 14 players when fullback Andrew Rees-Spowart was sin-binned and following a series of attempts to score following a powerful push in a scrum by the pack, the ball was released for Bonnell to go over the line again, this time for an unconverted try.
A yellow card for Narberth winger Aled Jones gave Waun a chance to take advantage of an extra man and the visitors showed their attacking qualities with a brace of tries in the space of five minutes, scored by lock Ceiran Davies and winger Lee Evans, respectively, both of which were converted by talented outside-half Jonathan Davies, to reduce the lead to 11 points.
At the start of the second half, the Otters increased the lead with a penalty from Nick Jones and midway through the half fullback Jonathan Morgan scored the first of two fine tries
He followed up with his second try after 72 minutes and both were the result of inventive running by the Narberth backs.
The first try was converted by Nick Jones and the second with a composed kick from the right touchline from the reliable left foot of replacement outside-half Iestyn Crompton.
Waun had a late consolation try by winger Daniel Fox in the closing minutes, again converted by Jonathan Davies.
Apart from their finishing, the Otters continued to work on tightening up the defence and no penalties were conceded,
Despite the miss-match in the try count, Waun always proved a threat and remained alive to scoring opportunities, especially in counter-attacks.
Speaking after the match, delighted head coach Sean Gale said: "It was an excellent win and we played some very good rugby, with a lot of the tries coming off the training paddock from set moves. The practice in training paid dividends with some clinical finishing.
"Up front, our set-piece was excellent, outside-half Nick Jones is playing very well and marshalling the boys. It was disappointing to leak two tries before half-time, but the discipline in defence in the second half was very good.
"We are having chances to score, which is a big improvement. The team spirit is excellent, with the players supporting and playing for each other and at the same time enjoying their rugby. We are looking forward to the second half of the season and not only are we doing quite well in the league, but we are also developing a lot of Pembrokeshire youngsters."
For Narberth, in an excellent team performance, there were good performances by outside-half Nick Jones in an all-round display, fullback Jonathan Morgan, who was hungry for the ball and made some exhilarating runs; centre Richard Davies cemented things together, while Tom Bonnell and Steve Martin finished off moves superbly.
Nick Jones was chosen as man-of-the-match by the Molson Coors Balcony Suite match sponsors, Molson Coors and Otters Holt match sponsors, the Narberth under 13 team officials and supporters.
The match ball sponsors were the Narberth RFC Former Players Association, OJ Williams, Andrew Cooper and the Friday Night Gang.
