Narberth Ath. 23 pts. Dunvant 50

On a day when weather and ground conditions were made for open rugby, Narberth Athletic came up against a stronger Dunvant XV who in centre Dai Norman had an outstanding player, scoring four tries.

Although this was a high-scoring game, it lacked a real competitive edge, with the Athletic unable to contain Dunvant in this Carmarthen Tyres West Wales Premier League game.

Dunvant started the game with a rush, moving the ball about the field and exploiting a slow-reacting Athletic.

In the first 10 minutes, Dunvant ran in two converted tries by Dai Norman, a mercurial centre, who was to become a thorn in the Athletic's side throughout the afternoon.

Dunvant produced another quick try, before the Athletic began to fight back.

Indeed, the first half was not all doom and gloom, young Aron Keane kicking three penalties, two from over 40 metres and one bouncing over the crossbar, to keep the Athletic in touch at half-time with the score at 19-9.

The second half started at a more positive pace for the Athletic, who produced some good rugby, which culminated in a well-worked pushover try by James Roberts, ably assisted by Ed Pritchard and Nathan Lloyd.

During the first 20 minutes of this half, the Athletic were holding their own, but centre Dai Norman struck again, producing two quick tries which seemed to initially deflate the young Athletic XV.

However, the Athletic stuck to their task and scored a second try through Peter Pritchard, with Aron Kean adding the extras with a successful conversion.

A final converted try by Dunvant sealed the result, with the final score 50-23.

Later, team manager Jon Hodgeon commented that the Athletic had many able players, producing spells of good rugby, but there was a lack of consistency.

"The Athletic squad has individual talents, but this needs to be transformed into team cohesion and awareness," he said. "This can only be achieved by regular training and preparation."

Team members worthy of a mention for their efforts are Tom Parsells, Garth Loughlan, James Roberts, Rhydian Williams and Aron Keane, but man-of-the-match was Nathan Lloyd, who annoyed many of the opposition throughout the afternoon with his aggressive commitment.
