Shoppers in South Pembrokeshire will soon be able to check out a new supermarket. The Co-operative Group has announced it is to sell its supermarket in Pembroke Dock to Asda for an undisclosed sum. The 81 staff at the Gordon Street store will be taken on by Asda as part of the deal. The move is in line with the Co-operative Group's strategy to concentrate on developing in the small supermarket and convenience sectors where it is strongest. Mark Roberts, the group's chief officer in Wales, said: "We are pleased to have concluded a deal which ensures employment for the staff and will help us fund further store developments and acquisitions in our focus sectors." Mr. Roberts emphasised that the Co-op is committed to community retailing in Wales. In the past year the Co-op has invested several million pounds in opening new stores and in refitting and converting local stores to its popular welcome convenience and market town supermarket formats which offer modern shopping facilities and comprehensive ranges. "The Co-op is the leading community retailer in the UK. Community retailing is what we do best and it is now the focus of our investment," he said. The 29,000 square feet Pembroke Dock Co-op will transfer to Asda on February 28. When contacted by the Observer, a spokesperson for the Co-operative Group confirmed that there were no plans to sell their Kilgetty store. "We spent £400,000 on a refit there last year and it is a very busy, very high performing store," said the spokesperson.
