Unfortunately last Friday evening the speaker had to cancel his visit to the Arts Club through illness, but as before on such occasions, one of the members agreed to give a talk instead and provided a most enjoyable evening.

Philip Harris spoke about the art of miniature painting which proved to be a most interesting subject. He began by telling a little of the history of the genre which originated in Persia and India some centuries ago. Their work was extremely fine, exquisitely coloured and was painted on ivory.

During mediaeval times, illuminated lettering became a tradition in Europe and particularly in England in the reign of Elizabeth I.

In recent years, there has been a resurrection of this branch of the arts, promoted strongly by the Hilyard Society and the Society of Limners. Australia is one of the main supporters of this style of painting.

Philip Harris then explained the technique of the art, including size, media, paper and brushes. Using his own home-made lectern and palette, he demonstrated in oils how he approached painting these small pictures. He had brought a number of his own miniatures to which he referred and which were very much admired by the audience.

As he worked, Philip had many anecdotes to relate and hints to give prospective painters.

The evening ended with questions from the audience who had been thoroughly absorbed by the artist at work.

The Arts Club is most grateful to Philip Harris for giving such an interesting evening at such short notice.

This (Friday) evening the Hill-Wiltchinsky Guitar Duo pay their second visit to Tenby Arts Club with an attractive and wide-ranging programme. The club is grateful for the support of the Welsh Arts Council and Pembrokeshire County Council in the promotion of these world-renowned musicians. Non-members are welcome to the Community Education Centre at 8 pm. Admission fee is £3.
